Provision of basic nursing care and support to health participants and research patients in clinical research, their families and significant others as delegated and supervised by the registered nurse; Care requirements are determined by the scope of study participation, the clinical condition of the patient, and the requirements and clinical effects of research procedures. Performs care using technical skills with research participants including: collecting specimens (may be completed on the CTRC units or may be done as Research on Location including driving to a site); measuring and recording vital signs, height/weight, intake and output and other relevant data; communicating in a spirit of cooperation and professionalism with patients, families, study teams, and co-workers; observing and reporting of research participant response to care; ensuring safe, ethical, and compassionate care of research subjects through working knowledge of protocols; assisting with admissions, discharges, transporting, and other aspects of care required by studies; other duties as assigned within the scope of practice for a CAN as defined by Board of Nursing Procedures for Research Support. Performs procedures as requested and delegated by the research nurse and principal investigator; Ability to follow instructions through a standard work process; ability to perform routine or repetitious tasks; ability to check work for accuracy before completion of tasks. Ability to support scientific research by assisting in data collection; ability to perform work that requires mental concentration; possess skills to comply with research protocol and work with research subjects in a safe, compassionate, and ethical manner. Perform EKGs’ phlebotomy, and lab processing; documenting according to CTRC and hospital guidelines to support data collection and effective patient care including e-charting and A2K order entry.
Performs phlebotomy and other specimen collection to support clinical research data collection and endpoints; performs point of care testing and records data per guidelines.
Performs daily tasks related to stocking supplies, quality assurance and other environmental and laboratory support to ensure a safe, clean, well-prepared and well-cared for equipment and environment, which includes following standard precautions using PPE for stocking supplies and ensuring inventory is appropriate; checking equipment and documenting in equipment logs, following HIPAA guidelines to ensure patient privacy and well-being; and participating as a team member in quality improvement initiatives to ensure the highest level of care and data retention are met.
Education and Experience
The individual assuming this position must possess current nursing assistant certification through the NC Department of Health & Human Services Nurse’s Aide Registry as well as Phlebotomy Certification. Minimum of at least one year experience.
Special Physical and Mental Requirements
Ability to move 50lbs without physical limitations. CPR certified or willingness and capability to obtain BLS certifications.
