Books-A-Million is looking for a Perl Programmer. The applicant will be responsible for developing and supporting the continued growth of Books-A-Million's internal and external applications. The ideal candidate will be a high-energy, self-starter, action oriented person that "makes-it-happen."

Reports To: Director of Programming

POSITION OBJECTIVE (ROLE)

Responsible for creating and maintaining applications and providing productions applications support, with periodic direction, guidance and review by senior developers and IT management.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Develop perl programs in a Unix environment

2. Design, implement, and test applications

3. Prepare technical and end-user documentation

4. Maintain existing applications

5. Create reports

6. Provide operational support for production tasks

7. Monitor and review production tasks

8. Provide emergency on-call support

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university with course work in information systems or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

Experience: 1 year of job-related experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and course work towards an advanced degree in information system or a related field

Skills:
Ability to create effective, efficient program code based upon detailed specifications, with periodic support and direction by more senior development staff.

Object-oriented development experience required; experience with Perforce, SQL (both ANSI and mysql specific extensions), Javascript and third-party APIs (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Prototype, CGI::Application etc) a plus.

Effective verbal and written communications.

Understanding of and compliance with IT development process.

Demonstrated ability to define and conduct unit testing of programs written or modified.

Developing analytical and solution design abilities.
