Summary: The Phlebotomist has the primary responsibility of performing phlebotomy, courier rounds, and clerical functions that involve the accessing and barcoding of specimens. The collection of blood specimens on patients from all age groups.

Education: High School diploma (or equivalent) and completion of approved phlebotomy program preferred.

In lieu of completion of approved phlebotomy program, applicants with High School diploma and completion of one full year of experience as a phlebotomist at an accredited hospital will be given preference.

Experience: Phlebotomist experience is preferred.

Other: Must have a valid driver's license with motor vehicle record acceptable to WestCare's auto liability insurance carrier, a reliable car with liability insurance if performing courier duties.

Physical Requirements: Sufficient sight (includes color discrimination), manual dexterity and mobility to function efficiently in exercising job responsibilities. Works in hazardous and bio-hazardous areas of the laboratory and is subject to cuts and punctures from equipment. For phlebotomy will be walking, bending and standing for 80-90 % of work shift. For courier, must be able to operate courier vehicle for extended periods of time, getting in and out of vehicle at frequent intervals. Able to lift 40 lbs. as required to stock reagents and various lab supplies. Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written). Ability to remain calm, continue to function effectively and develop priorities during stressful situations. Works scheduled hours that include weekends, holidays, and nights as necessary.

Working Environment : Potential exposure to patients who may be physically or verbally abusive. Potential exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials. Position requires the use of personal protective equipment during several patient and equipment related activities.
