The Surgical Physician Assistants employed by Norwalk Hospital function under the responsibility and supervision of the attending surgeon in each surgical service. Ultimate responsibility is to the Chairman, Department of Surgery. The four main responsibilities are: perform history and physical examinations, assist during surgical procedures, assist with preoperative and postoperative care of the patient and assist/evaluate the patient in an emergency situation. Secondary clinical responsibilities include: assist physician with routine therapeutic duties (cleanse/dress wounds, suture minor wounds/lacerations, suture removal); write patient orders/prescriptions per the direction of the supervising physician, draw venous/arterial blood samples, nasogastric intubation, insertion of urinary catheters, venous cutdowns and insertion of central venous pressure lines, perform thoracentesis and paracentesis. Administrative duties include: maintain clinical medical records, prepare material for clinical conferences, attend departmental, scientific and clinical meetings, collaborate with PA Surgical Residency Training Program.
Baccalaureate degree. Graduate of an approved PA school or its equivalent. Completion of twelve months graduate training in a surgical program.
Additional Job Requirements:
Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and PA licensure by the State of Connecticut. BLS certification required; ACLS, preferred. Must maintain 100 CME's over two years.
