Example of Duties:

Performs technical planning work involving the research, review, analysis and coordination of annexation, and general plan amendment related development requests, as well as architectural and site design analysis. Reviews and evaluates population statistics and demographic information and presents findings and recommendations to executive staff, city planning commission, city council, and the public. Reviews applications for compliance with city general plan, development policies, design codes. Coordinates application review process with affected parties, including applicant, property owner, planning staff, architects and engineers, city regulatory and review bodies, and the public. Prepares and presents written and oral reports to regulatory and hearing bodies, including planning staff findings and recommendations. Maintains planning documents, planning and development codes, and related regulations for research, documentation, and public access. Develops and maintains effective inter-agency communication such as Texas Department of Transportation, Houston Galveston Area Council, Harris County, etc. Maintains land use and development data and uses GIS data to analyze land uses and prepare maps, graphics, reports and related documents. Provides information and assistance to other planning staff members, including subordinates. Oversees and provides guidance to the CDBG department and Housing departments. Represents the City at public information and review meetings. Provides information and recommendations for amendments on short-term and long-range planning issues and proposed revisions to the city general plans and development codes and policies. Provides technical support and recommendations on neighborhood planning assignments including data gathering and community participation projects. Performs all work consistent with City policies, procedures, vision and values. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the Employee Handbook.


Master’s Degree in Urban or Regional Planning. Certified by American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is preferred. Minimum of 5 years as a City Planner or related field. Minimum of 5 years as supervising personnel. Valid Texas driver’s license and good driving record.
