The University Police Department at Florida Atlantic University is currently seeking three Police Communication Officers (Dispatchers).
Police Dispatchers manage Police and other radio systems, monitoring alarm, accessing control and camera systems. These positions are also responsible for dispatching officers and other emergency personnel as needed; accurately documenting officer status, location and activity; handling emergency and non-emergency telephone calls; prioritizing calls and channeling pertinent information to officers and supervisory personnel; and making necessary emergency notifications.
Other duties include: operating Criminal Justice Information Systems computer terminal to include inquiries and entering persons, vehicles and property at the direction of officers. Providing the public with assistance on complaints and informational services, lost and found property, bicycle registration, directions, fingerprinting and other services. Using tact and discretion, and observes strict confidentiality rules.
Directing persons to proper supervisory level as necessary. Monitoring messages directed to the department and information related to local criminal activity and officer safety. Demonstrating knowledge of police terminology and procedures, Florida criminal and civil law as it pertains to police operations, campus geography, building numbers, police services, and University policies and procedures pertaining to police operations.
Minimum qualifications include:
High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of public safety experience receiving, assessing and dispatching calls for assistance is required.
State certification on NCIC/FCIC computer system is required for the position; candidate hired for the position must obtain within 6 months of employment. Individual with current NCIC/FCIC certification is preferred.
Ability to communicate effectively, to convey reassurance, to exercise tact and patience in stressful situations, and to dispatch emergency personnel in emergency situations is essential. Ability to organize and initiate work to be performed, as well as, the ability to master a variety of communications equipment efficiently (radios, telephones, recording devices, CAD terminals) are also required. Demonstrable skills in typing required.
