Job Description
A Postdoctoral Research Associate position in systems biodesign and microbial genomics is available within the Environmental Microbiology Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

Capitalizing on the experience and knowledge gained through integrated studies of model microbes, PNNL is extending the systems-level approaches to non-traditional biological chassis, such as cyanobacteria, for developing unique capabilities in biosystems engineering and synthetic biology. As new design principles are implemented to improve cellular properties through assembly and introduction of new parts and biochemical modules, information characterizing the properties of individual parts, as well as their behavior within the context of the systems in which they operate, are critical limiting factors. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team of scientists focusing on developing fundamental understanding of global regulatory pathways in model cyanobacteria and mechanisms that integrate internal with environmental cues at transcriptional, post-transcriptional, and translational levels. An important component of the research will focus on extending the obtained knowledge for engineering synthetic regulatory elements and control switches that will be integrated into the native networks to direct metabolism and carbon partitioning.
Minimum Requirements
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years from an accredited college or university.

All staff at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory must be able to demonstrate the legal right to work in the United States.
The candidate should have a Ph.D. in microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics or related areas.

Previous research experience in microbial genomics/genetics, physiology, and biochemistry with emphasis on regulation and signal transduction is essential.

Knowledge of gene regulatory network modeling will also be an asset as is the ability to integrate experimental and computational approaches.

The Environmental Microbiology group at PNNL has outstanding research facilities for all aspects of biological research as well as access to extensive analytical, electron microscopy, and global transcriptomic and proteomics capabilities within the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory at PNNL, a national DOE user facility. The successful candidate will interact with other staff and participate in team-based collaborative research within PNNL as well as with external organizations and as such is expected to have strong written and oral communication skills.
