Job Description
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a motivated postdoctoral candidate to conduct genome sequence-enabled research on microbial phototrophic and chemotrophic mat communities. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in analysis of genomic and metagenomic sequence data and metabolic reconstruction. Experience in taxonomic binning of metagenomic sequence from high diversity samples is essential. A broad background in bacterial and archaeal ecology and biochemistry sufficient to design and conduct laboratory studies to test hypotheses regarding interactions between autotrophs and heterotrophs is necessary. Experience in genetic manipulation and genomic analysis of microbes that inhabit selected extremophilic communities (see below) is also desirable, but not essential. The successful candidate will have facility with a programming language (Perl, Python, C, Java, etc.) and the Linux operating system. Experience with relational databases (for example MySQL) is also desired. The post-doctoral investigator will act in close collaboration with senior PNNL staff.
The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional effort led by PNNL to conduct research aimed at understanding the role of autotroph-heterotroph interactions in stable mat communities.

This team works with three different natural microbial mat communities; photoautotrophic mats found in a hypersaline lake in northern Washington state, photoautotrophic mats common to alkaline siliceous hot springs in Yellowstone National Park (YNP), and chemoautotrophic mats that form in YNP acidic hypothermophilic springs.

The scope of the team research extends from characterization of mat communities using metagenomics and metagenomics-enabled approaches to probe interactions to using defined laboratory cultures under controlled conditions to test specific hypotheses regarding interactions.

The team is comprised of experts in microbial systems and advanced methodologies including sequence-enabled technologies (e.g. proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, modeling, comparative genomics, etc.) and methods for characterizing microbes (e.g., flow cytometry, stable isotope analysis, electron and confocal microscopy, controlled microbial cultivation).
The opening is in the Environmental Microbiology Group, Biological Sciences Division of PNNL located in Richland, Washington.

The position is immediately available for a 2-year appointment with potential extension.

Minimum Requirements
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years from an accredited college or university.

Qualifications
The candidate should have a Ph.D. in microbiology, microbial physiology, or related area.

Strong written and oral communication skills are essential; the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team setting and to generate high-quality scientific publication is also expected.
