Job Responsibilities

San Diego State University is recruiting a post-doctoral fellow to determine the function of unknown proteins from marine viral metagenomes. The project involves an interdisciplinary team of biologists, computer scientists, and mathematicians.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants are required to have a PhD in a relevant field. Must be independent and proficient at trouble-shooting, as well as able to work in a large team. Proficient writing skills are required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong computer scripting and statistical skills are needed.

Experience in flux balance and/or metabolomics helpful. Strong organizational abilities, the ability to interact and communicate effectively with a diverse population and the ability to prioritize and multitask.

Working Conditions

The laboratory research areas include genomic analysis of marine phage, opportunistic infections and coral disease, and diversity of coral-associated bacteria as well as the dynamics of bacteria, phage, and eukaryotic viruses in the respiratory tracts of individuals with and without Cystic Fibrosis. Research positions in the lab are currently funded by NIH and NSF. Some work with toxic chemicals is carried out under CalOSHA conditions and pathogens under BSL2 conditions (lab has a chemical and biosafety hood). The noise level is low to average for a molecular biology lab.
