The North Carolina Department of Administration is seeking applicants for a Processing Assistant IV position for our Veterans Affairs office located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina (Forsyth County). The function of Veterans Affairs is to assist veterans and their families in the presentation, processing, proof and establishment of claims, privileges, rights and benefits as they may be entitled to under Federal, State or Local. The Division also cooperates with the various governmental units and veterans organizations in seeking to serv ic e veterans.

The position provides office support for the Veterans Affairs State Service Office in Winston-Salem, NC and will serve as liaison between state and county offices with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The position is responsible for typing letters, memorandums, forms, reports and other documents of a technical nature; composing and typing routine letters and forms; assisting in preparing and submitting monthly reports; establishing and maintaining office files, inventory and records; filing daily correspondence and maintaining diaries. Position will also process incoming and outgoing mail and will be responsible for distributing correspondence and copies to the appropriate destination. This position will also be responsible for answering a multi-line telephone system, greeting visitors and clients, and providing benefits information of a routine nature or making appropriate referral for assistance. The work is performed on a personal computer in a Windows environment using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) software, in a Local Area Network (LAN) configuration. This position will require an individual who has well-developed interpersonal, communication, organizational, mathematical, typing and computer skills.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

The individual in this position should have significant knowledge of office or work unit procedures, methods and practices as well as be able to perform the required duties professionally, and with minimal supervision and direction. The preferred applicant will have significant knowledge of and ability to use correct grammar, vocabulary, spelling and office terminology to compose and/or proofread correspondence, reports and other materials. This position requires an individual who is self-motivated, can handle sensitive and/or confidential information appropriately, must be able to follow verbal instructions, must interact well with others, and has personal computer skills in word processing and the Internet. The preferred applicant will possess excellent and well-developed organization and communication skills, typing and data entry skills and ability to type and compose correspondence from notes and/or dictation using correct grammar and vocabulary. The applicant should have a working knowledge of office methods & procedures, ability to establish and maintain a filing system, ability to use a variety of office machines, should possess excellent writing skills, and be highly motivated and able to work independently.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from High School and demonstrated possession of knowledge, skills and abilities gained through at two years of office assistant/secretarial experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
