The incumbent will be a member of the Seeds Traits and Oils Team under the direction of the: North American Production Research Leader. Interfacing with other SEEDS & TRAITS and OPERATIONS members, (i.e., Production Research Specialist, Hybrid Seed Production, Parent Seed Production, Traits, DH & Molecular Lab and Scientists) the individuals’ responsibilities will include:

Technical field duties such as:
Field maintenance that involves:
Identifying and participating in planning and executing individual plant, plot and site maintenance activities throughout the field season including hauling of equipment, equipment maintenance, spraying of pesticides, bagging of plants, rouging, hand harvest and equipment harvest of plants and plots.

Field maintenance includes the use of small plot equipment requiring the practice of Responsible Care at all times in handling, maintenance, loading/unloading and hauling of this equipment.

Project Work:
Participate in quarterly, monthly and weekly field planning update meetings to understand project work and responsibilities.

Liaise with operations and the canola breeding team to prepare planting lists, including sampling and setting up seed in planting order.

Seed, collect data and harvest trials for production research.

Manage specific projects from beginning to end within the production research program with high attention to detail.

Record keeping:
Ensure proper records are kept on seed, plants and plots in the production research program.

Record and enter data into database (Variety).

Maintain compliance with seed inventory, equipment maintenance and EH&S documentation.

Additional duties:
Identify opportunities for additional responsibilities to assist scientist in project development.

In addition to practicing Responsible Care in the Production Research program, identify responsibilities to lead EH&S initiatives.

Provide leadership to, motivate and assist summer interns with day to day activities and assist in managing casual worker activities.

Contribute to Continuous Improvement activities within the workgroup.

Maintain current Standard Operating Procedures and write new SOP/Pre Task Analysis Cards as needed to improve field efficiencies and to provide a safe environment for all to work in.

Position will be located at Lethbridge, Alberta


This position requires a B.Sc. or Diploma with related experience.

A working knowledge of hybrid canola seed production and canola breeding programs would be an asset.

This position requires an individual with excellent interpersonal skills and critical thinking.

This position requires the ability to work on teams as well as work independently.

This individual requires leadership skills and should possess problem solving skills. Proficiency in computer skills is also required.
