Overview of Position
The Product Specialist is responsible for the following activities:
Act as the field’s “expert” on one or more MapR products, and make it a priority to continually grow his/her base of expertise on those products. The Product Specialist is the ultimate “power user” of the product, and must exhibit a profound understanding of the products in terms of both how they are used, and how they function internally.
Continually learn, staying up to date on the assigned products, as well as any related technologies; work with Engineering as products are developed, staying current with key design decisions.
Act as the final technical “backstop” for all questions that arise from the field on the products.
Oversee strategic Proofs of Concept (POC’s) that involve the assigned products, including the analysis of customer workflows and workloads, and expected and delivered product metrics.
Provide data to Engineering or Support captured from customer workflows and workloads.
Give guidance and best practice to the field on assigned products—through written materials, presentations, videos, and other media as required.
Contribute to the development of field-targeted documentation on assigned products.
Create, define and execute benchmarks for assigned products.
Required Background, by Role:
The Product Specialist is a member of the MapR Technologies field sales team, and supports the field as the ultimate technical authority on the use and expected behavior of specific, assigned products. The Product Specialists enthusiastically gets involved with ongoing customer POC’s when needed. The Product Specialists are the main gateways into Engineering for the field, and as such they have a responsibility to the field to ensure products are being used for maximum customer benefit.
The Product Specialists should be a technology enthusiast, with tremendous technical acumen and credibility. The Product Specialist must be able to demonstrate significant architectural knowledge of a broad range of technologies, with specialist depth in one or two core technologies. An academic background in computer science or computer engineering to the undergraduate level is a must; a graduate degree in these fields is highly desirable.
Some experience working with customers (not necessarily in a sales capacity) is highly desirable.
Since the candidate will be working with the field, with customers and with Engineering constantly, superior communication skills, both written and oral, are a must.
Experience with various databases, either traditional (Oracle, DB2, Informix, Sybase, etc) or NoSQL databases (Mongo, HBase, Couch, Cassandra, Riak, etc) is a must
Java programming - must at least be able to read Java, preferably write Java
Understanding of how databases work internally (e.g. query optimization) is desirable
Understanding of database performance analysis and tuning is highly desirable
Understanding of schema design is desirable
Understanding of search technologies (ElasticSearch, LucidWorks, Solr/Lucene) is highly desirable
Support the field, and customers, on an ongoing basis. Work with Engineering to stay abreast of changes in assigned products. Travel would be very limited. Role is San Jose-based.
Education and Experience:
Educational background in computer science or computer engineering is desirable
Some experience working with customers is highly desired, although this does not have to be in a sales capacity
Experience with data warehousing, data analytics and business intelligence systems is desirable
Strong written and oral communication skills
Intellectual curiosity and an ability to learn quickly is a must
