Reiman Gardens creates a striking entrance to Iowa State University and the city of Ames. Situated on a 14-acre site, the year-round facility features distinct gardens throughout the outdoor areas, an indoor Conservatory, 2,500-square-foot indoor Butterfly Wing, butterfly emergence cases, a Gift Shop, and five supporting greenhouses. Reiman Gardens' mission is to educate, enchant and inspire environmental stewardship through displays of living beauty.
Applications are being accepted for a Program Assistant I to coordinate and execute Reiman Gardens' events for its members and guests, both adult and youth. This position will be responsible for creating, planning and executing events which include event sponsorships, developing and adhering to event budgets, as well as collaborating with the Volunteer Coordinator and Communications Specialist to coordinate advertising and volunteer needs. This position will review the current events schedule and determine the most successful events for attendance, education, and membership retention goals; develop new events or discard old events as needed; and supervise all volunteers at events. This position will also conduct appropriate follow-up after an event, including thank you cards and event critique; and participate with other functions in the Gardens, including assisting with the docent responsibilities of the Butterfly Wing, rotating with all full-time staff as the on-site manager on summer and holiday weekends.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently and in a team environment; be self-motivated, detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines; manage multiple ongoing tasks; and possess strong written and oral communication skills. Working well with people of many different personalities and backgrounds, promoting a positive atmosphere among volunteers and staff are also essential for success in this position.
Duties of this position require the ability to work weekends, holidays and evenings as needed.
Bachelor's degree and related experience OR a combination of related education and experience totaling more than four years. Experience must be at a comparable level and directly related to the duties of this position.
- Bachelor's degree in event planning, marketing, business, education, communications, public relations or related field.
- Experience with non-profit event planning.
- Experience that demonstrates familiarity with word processing and computer spreadsheet programs.
- Event management experience.
- Experience training, working with volunteers and the public.
- Experience creating event communications.
- Experience with solicitation of different supplies and financial support.
-Experience with public speaking.
