Direct activities related to the identification, design, development and implementation of externally and internally funded research projects. Act as the Principal Investigator (or similar leadership role) to coordinate research activities intended to produce new knowledge, and appropriately disseminate research findings. Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with external research funders and partners. Supervise and mentor professional personnel on research and evaluation activities. Represent The Joint Commission at speaking engagements and as a liaison to various professional organizations. Assist in the development of research goals and plans that advance the mission of The Joint Commission.
Requirements
1. The level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of an advanced degree in a health care-related field (Doctoral degree preferred).

2. Seven to ten years of increasing responsibility in health care administration or delivery, research and/or teaching. Previous experience in project management, quality improvement-related research and healthcare economics is highly desirable.

3. Managerial ability to plan, organize and synthesize complex research and evaluation activities involving a wide range of individuals, groups, and/or committees. Ability to complete work independently and lead project teams.

4. A solid understanding of the issues surrounding research design, study methodology and the underlying principles of health services research. Knowledge and experience in research proposal writing for government agencies and private entities.

5. Strong analytic abilities to develop research protocols, design data collection systems, interpret research and evaluation results, and oversee project budgets.

6. Effective interpersonal skills to manage and mentor project staff and interact with individuals at various levels both inside and outside of the organization, often in sensitive situations requiring political awareness.

7. Exceptional writing skills, as established through a verifiable track record of peer-reviewed publications or similar written reports. Demonstrated ability to communicate research results to both scientific and professional audiences.
