Certification as a public health nurse in Minnesota and current licensure as a registered nurse in Minnesota. Two years of nursing experience preferred. Prefer nursing experience in a community/public health setting and experience in child and family health. This position is a School Public Health Nurse where a majority of work will be performed in various school settings. If called for an interview, you will be requested to bring a written reference or your performance review from your most recent/current supervisor and one other letter of reference from a recent workplace. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid Minnesota driver’s license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three years.

Nature of Work:
Under public health nursing supervision, provides nursing services to individuals, families and target groups in the community directed to the prevention of disease and disability, management of self-care, promotion of healthy lifestyles and protection of the community’s health. Works within a public health nursing program such as Healthy Children and Families, Healthy Communities, Preventive Health Services or Disease Prevention and Control Clinic services. Promotes and maintains the health of individuals and target groups through teaching, counseling and other prevention and rehabilitative measures. Performs related work as assigned. Must be available to support the department during emergency situations.

Examples of Work:
Promotes and maintains health of individuals, families and communities through teaching, counseling and applying appropriate prevention and rehabilitation measures. Assists families and individuals to recognize their health needs or problems and guides them in making plans to alleviate them Interprets to individuals and their families the implications of a medical diagnosis and assists them with carrying out the treatment plan Interprets public health nursing and coordinates agency programs with others to achieve effective and efficient services Assists with other projects as assigned Consults with physicians, school personnel, social services personnel and other agencies in the promotion of optimum health practices Participates in the investigation of communicable diseases outbreaks Conducts screening programs for target groups, makes referrals for care and provides follow-up Participates in collecting data and planning public health programs as required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Prefer experience in working with pregnant women, parenting families and young children. Considerable knowledge of the application of nursing practices Considerable knowledge of public health nursing theory Ability to assume responsibility for appropriate judgment in community care settings Ability to give skilled nursing care to patients Ability to apply previously acquired knowledge and skills to new situations Ability to use supervision and guidance Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing Ability to make independent decisions Ability to assess nursing needs and to develop and carry out nursing care plans In compliance w/ the Americans with Disabilities Act the following represents the Physical/Environmental Demands : This position requires a majority of time (up to 70%) spent walking and sitting. Some standing is required and objects of usually no more than ten (10) pounds need to be lifted, carried or pushed. Adverse movements such as reaching overhead, bending or crouching are sometimes required. Simultaneous/repetitive use of both hands is required for writing and data entry. Excellent sensory skills are important (sight, hearing and speech) as well as ability to communicate effectively. No adverse working conditions.
