NATURE OF WORK

Under limited supervision, manages, supervises, and administers a comprehensive system-wide communication and public relations plan for Chatham County Schools. Employee serves as liaison and counsel to the Board of Education, Superintendent and senior administrators regarding necessary and appropriate actions to communicate the mission, vision, and priorities of the district and to engender public understanding and support of the role, objectives, accomplishments and needs of the school district. Employee serves as the media liaison on district-wide events and issues and acts as the spokesperson for the district as appropriate. Employee also provides leadership for the district arts programs, both visual and performing, primarily in the areas of strategic planning and curriculum and instruction. Reports to the Superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS

Four year college degree (Degree in Journalism or Communications preferred)

Experience in public relations or related public service work preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Skill in effective oral and written communication

• Extensive knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Serves as the information liaison between the Chatham County School and community at large.
• Helps set annual objectives for the public information program and assists in planning budget for meeting objectives.
• Serves as liaison between the Chatham County Schools and news media and supervises the production and distribution of news releases; arranges for news conferences as needed.
• Supervises and coordinates the preparation of system wide publications including information brochures, calendars, reviews of Board meetings, Annual Report, handbooks, etc.
• Assists in the polling and/or surveying of public opinion regarding issues in education.
• Maintains open lines of communication with all community organizations.
• Speaks at public meetings on issues of general or specific pertinence to the Chatham County Schools at the request of the superintendent.
• Meets and corresponds regularly with school-based public relations contact person.
• Coordinates efforts with Chamber of Commerce on partnership with the schools.
• Coordinates annual United Way Campaign in the Chatham County Schools.
• Participates in the development of the district school calendar and prepares the calendar for public distribution.
• Coordinates information meetings with Chatham County realtors.
• Assists in the preparation of presentations for various external groups about the Chatham County Schools.
• Represents the Chatham County Schools as requested by the superintendent.
• Coordinates communications with the public and the media during crisis situations.
• Manages the distribution of external information.
• Maintains and coordinates the updating of the school system's web page as needed.
• Coordinates the district's instant messaging system.
• Oversees the development and facilitation of professional development sessions for the arts and ensures regular collaboration among art teachers.
• Leads the coordination for annual district arts events, including opera presentation for fifth graders, All-County Chorus, All-County Band, and Chatham County Schools Arts Extravaganza.
• Identifies arts program needs and develops plans to address them.
• Serves as an advocate for all arts programs.
• Serves as the district point of contact for community arts partners and arts teachers.
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Full-time for twelve months

Salary based on state and local salary schedules
