SALARY : From $16.902 to $27.889 per hour or $35,291.38 to $58,232.23 annually, plus excellent benefits . A six-month probationary period is required. This title is included in pay schedule and range 07-04.

JOB DUTIES : This position facilitates comprehensive communication program, marketing strategies and external public relations activities associated with the department. The position is responsible for providing strategic direction for the department regarding communications and public relations, using innovative communication methods and technologies. This position is also responsible for formulating, implementing and managing the department’s channels of communication, including the development and maintenance of the department's web presence. The person filling this position will advise the department’s management team in communications policies and strategies and works collaboratively to develop appropriate departmental communications practices. Additionally, this position may coordinate special events, manage customer and governance relationships, and act as the department’s public relations liaison.

Under the general supervision of a Police Lieutenant, the Communications Specialist develops promotional items, activities, events, and publications to promote the department’s program services. This position will proofread copies of all publications for accuracy and professionalism; maintains a production schedule of all publications; develops records and reports to analyze trends and successes of various promotional campaigns; and develops and implements marketing policies and procedures. Further responsibilities of this position include developing and executing marketing data-gathering instruments such as surveys, opinion polls, or questionnaires; analyzing and reporting on trends of various promotional campaigns. This position will also provide general office support duties, such as responding to mail and telephone inquiries; composing correspondence in response to campus and community requests; maintaining office files; and maintaining confidentiality as appropriate.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED : Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, interview techniques, professional marketing methods, journalistic and informational styles, various communications media, use of Microsoft Office, Adobe Professional and Microsoft Sharepoint. Skills in staying organized. Ability to devise public relations strategies, formulate public information dissemination strategies, organize thoughts before speaking, use appropriate non-verbal language, plan, organize, implement, and direct promotional activities, utilize the Internet, recognize and determine potential crisis situations, anticipate questions from the press, present verbal information in a concise manner, arrange information into a logical order, present written information in a concise manner, provide constructive feedback, express thoughts completely and unambiguously, choose language and grammar suited to the listener, gain cooperation through discussion and persuasion, project an appropriate demeanor to include eye contact, body language, and tone of voice, write interesting and informative articles, news releases, pamphlets, reports, brochures, and related publicity materials, follow the rules of courtesy during interactions, read and interpret policies, procedures, regulations, and laws, edit publications for accuracy, clarity, and relevance, elicit ideas, feelings, and perceptions of others, keep information confidential, work as a team member as well as work independently, build positive relationships and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, demonstrate the Department values of Respect, Integrity, Compassion and Honor, lead and direct the work of others, learn and grow from mistakes and accept constructive feedback, have high ethical standards and demonstrate high professional standards.
