Optimal, Inc. provides unparalleled audience data to help marketers manage and optimize their social advertising campaigns, all in real-time. Optimal was named the 9th fastest-growing, privately-held company in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2011 by the San Francisco Business Times and PwC. We are a Facebook Preferred Marketing Developer and are working closely with other major social networks, but our vision is a more general one – to be the numerati behind what it means to engage in a world where people are voluntarily social and highly mobile.

We are growing very rapidly and occupy a unique position in the social advertising ecosystem. Optimal is seeking top-caliber, motivated individuals who view optimality as a way of being, whose curiosity embraces both theory and practicality, and who are enthusiastic about applying their talent to the future of social media: open graphs, real-time, big data, and word-of-mouth at scale. Our culture is built around an intelligent and professional look at the wider world of online and social media, but we are also a group that doesn't take ourselves too seriously. If you want to work with smart people and change social marketing forever, come and join us!

Responsibilities:
Optimal is looking for a Python/Data Engineer. You will co-own our entire data stack, which includes a user-facing Django app, MongoDB and Postgres on the backend, some nifty Backbone.js/D3 client-side tools, and Redis wherever we can find a way to use it. We work mostly in Python.

Your tasks will be broad, and they will vary substantially, but data will be the thread that ties it all together -- collecting, storing, visualizing and analyzing, and most importantly making it all actionable and addressable for our clients. For the sake of example, you might be asked to:

Design an autoscaling heuristic to grow and shrink our EC2 cluster; write a process that implements your heuristic; and build a front-end to let our account managers appropriately prioritize jobs based on business need.

Improve the performance of some of our social interest recommendation algorithms. Numpy not cutting it? Weave.blitz giving you headaches? Wanna write your Python C extension? Good. Never written a Python C extension? Great! Learn.

Our data products are young; they are growing and changing constantly -- and quickly. Our most recent product went from idea, to spec, to a nationally publicized launch in 20 days. If you want to not only work with huge datasets, but get into the weeds and build products out of those datasets that companies find valuable and beautiful, drop us a line and let us know why.
