Direct and oversee coverage of daily news and long-term journalism projects for the college’s multiple digital and broadcast platforms through the Integrated News Facility, a 100-seat newsroom feeding content for digital and terrestrial broadcast operations in news, weather and sports. This is a hands-on position directing a cross-platform professional newsroom generating content for a non-student audience, yet produced mostly by undergraduate students. Thus, this is a job that requires several different skills: strong news judgment and management experience, an affinity for teaching and mentorship, and deep knowledge of established and emerging platforms. This person will serve as leader of an operation that provides high quality information as both a public service ( NPR and PBS affiliates) and commercial enterprise (TV, radio and web). At the same time, this person must be focused on the future. We are seeking someone who knows the forces acting on our industries and can help lead us forward by taking an active role in development of our mobile operations and other digital businesses.
Oversee production of the news, weather and sports content created in the Integrated News Facility and related digital assets/platforms. Serve as leader of an operation that not only provides high quality information as a public service, but also serves as a training ground for students in the College of Journalism and Communications. Produce a compelling and far-reaching news report for the college’s public media platforms and commercial properties to generate market-appropriate opportunities for donor support (public) and generation of advertising revenue (commercial).
Supervise six full-time, professional news managers; work with the faculty supervisor of Noticias WUFT and the director of the WRUF -TV.
Participate in the College’s efforts to develop digital businesses and oversight of external commercial news partnerships and alliances.
Assist in the teaching, mentoring and oversight of student reporters, photographers, videographers, producers, editors, etc.
Work with the College’s academic departments to provide educational opportunities for CJC students.
Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience; or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of appropriate experience.
