Minimum Education and Experience:

This position is being recruited for at the Journey Competency Level under the Career Banding Program. The hiring range for this position is $35,363-$55,444, and the salary grade equivalent is 70. ************************************************************************************************************************* POSITION DESCRIPTION: This Research Specialist position functions as a Respiratory Therapist in support of clinical research within Pediatric Pulmonology. This position directly supports the extensive research endeavors of the Pediatric Pulmonary Division by supporting multiple research studies, particularly those utilizing results from the Infant Pulmonary Function Testing Lab (iPFT). The Research Specialist will: perform a variety of infant, preschool and school age pulmonary function tests; monitor patient conditions pre-, during, and post-procedure; organize the iPFT Lab; maintain laboratory equipment; present, interpret and analyze data for research publications/presentations and grant applications; enter subject and testing data into research databases. Other responsibilities may include: regulatory documentation (IRB, CTRC) prep, clinical study subject recruitment, coordination of research visits, and assistance in the development of study procedures. The Research Specialist will interact with children and families, obtain informed consent for studies, and collect/obtain various biological samples and/or test results, per protocol. This individual will work closely with the senior Research Specialist in the iPFT lab and will meet regularly with the iPFT Medical Director for guidance; however, considerable day-to-day decision making will be performed by the Research Specialist. It is essential the selected candidate possess: training and certification as a Respiratory Therapist, knowledge of lung function physiology and testing; experience with standard computer systems/programs (including MS Excel, MS Word and MS PowerPoint); and demonstrated ability to work independently with limited guidance. The selected candidate will demonstrate patience while working with young children and be particularly attentive to detail and accuracy. The role requires an organized, flexible individual, able to handle multiple, competing priorities utilizing effective time management skills and capable of operating safely and efficiently in a clinical research environment. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills are required for the role to function as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferably, the selected candidate will have experience in: performing pulmonary testing on a pediatric population, human studies research including direct patient interaction (particularly children and families), and the general operations of an academic-clinical department. Previous experience at UNC School of Medicine/UNC Hospitals or other clinical environment is desirable.
