Virginia Beach
Psychiatric Center (VBPC) is a 100-bed freestanding hospital offering
acute psychiatric and substance abuse services for adults 18 years
and older, as well as acute psychiatric services for children ages
3-11 and adolescents, 12-17. The hospital is accessible 24 hours a
day for admissions, and includes mental health assessments and
referral network. Treatment programs and specialty services at VBPC
include substance abuse, dual diagnosis / rapid stabilization, and
partial hospitalization.

Virginia Beach Psychiatric
Center currently has a (Registered Nurse - RN - Chemical Dependency
  • Partial Hospitalization Program) position available . The
candidate selected will be responsible for the following:
Assists in educating patients and significant others on the disease
concept of chemical dependency , principles of
12-Step recovery programs, and on the dynamics of enabling behaviors
of others. Assists in organizing, managing and supervising group,
individual and family counseling sessions; chemical dependency
education sessions; performs chemical dependency evaluations. Assists
in the development of treatment plans, providing case management and
case documentation in accordance with the treatment philosophy,
hospital policies and procedures and state, federal and JCAHO
guidelines. Interacts with patients, their families, clinical team,
and community resources, establishing relationships and providing
positive customer service. Performs technical / patient duties, as
appropriate. Serves as an active member of the clinical staff;
maintains a therapeutic relationship with adult patients; assists in
maintenance of a safe, clean therapeutic environment; assures adult
patient participation in program activities; and assists in
maintenance of adult patient health and safety.
Develops and
maintains a professionally empathetic relationship with patients.
Assist in providing special treatment needs of patients as directed
by the Program Coordinator.
  • Provides assessment, nursing
care and evaluation of nursing care
  • Ensures consistent
use of the nursing process in providing quality care.

Interacts with patients, patient families, clinical team, and
community resources establishing relationships and providing positive
customer service.
  • Provides evidence-bases care.
  • Coordinates and delegates direct care, planning, monitoring
and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions for designated
  • Ensures consistent use of psychiatric nursing
process in providing quality care.
  • Develops nursing
treatment plans base on the nursing assessment and individualized
needs of the patient
  • Modifies the nursing treatment
plans based on patient needs and nursing re-assessment (daily as
  • Participates in team meetings, as assigned, to
ensure integrated treatment planning.
  • Performs physical
and mental assessment on admission and every 24 hours, and/or as
  • Assess patient in crisis and acts appropriately
to ensure patient’s safety.
  • Assess patient’s
family as a support system and identifies strengths and stressors
within the family on admission and on daily nursing assessments
  • Performs patient searches per hospital policy, including
patient’s belongings, room, and unit.
  • Facilitates
or co-facilitates community meetings, didactic groups and other
groups as applicable.


The following are the job requirements for the (The following are

Dependency Partial Hospitalization Program) position:
  • Requires graduation from an accredited nursing
program with licensure and registration by the Virginia Board of
Nurse Examiners as a Registered Nurse.
  • One year prior
adult, children and adolescent psychiatric and chemical dependency
experience preferred. Must possess knowledge of basic psychiatric
nursing procedures working with a general population including
adults, children, adolescents, and chemically dependent individuals.

  • Knowledge of therapeutic processes, growth and
development, limit setting, behavior management and
establishing/maintaining therapeutic relationships required.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the disease process of
chemical dependency and how it affects the patients’ medical,
social, financial and family status.
  • Demonstrates an
understanding of drugs/medications, their abuse potential, symptoms
of use and withdrawal and appropriate detoxification procedures.
  • Demonstrates understanding of 12 Steps and 12 Traditions and
is supportive of the 12-Step philosophies and is supportive of AA, NA
  • Demonstrates understanding of dual
diagnosis disorders and how they affect the patient’s medical,
social, financial and family status.
