Summary: Performs the primary functions of a Registered Professional Nurse, supervising care and testing for patients undergoing procedures in Cardiology Services. Is responsible for adhering to all established Hospital Policies. Is accountable to managing all related supplies and equipment and for promoting teamwork with all members of the healthcare team. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.

1. Under direction of Cardiologist, supervises cardiac stress testing
-- Screens patients for suitability of test, identifies physical, emotional, and medical parameters and determines outcome
-- Identifies contraindications for testing, notifies Cardiologist
and referring MD
-- Recognizes and treats cardiac arrhythmias
-- Administers medications according to test policy
-- Recognizes and initiates treatment for adverse outcomes
-- Provides Cardiologist with clinical information for test prognosis
-- Conducts pre- and post-test patient education

2. Conduct Tilt Table testing
-- Screens patients for suitability of test, identifies physical
emotional, and medical parameters and determines outcome
-- Identifies contraindications for testing, notifies Cardiologist
and referring MD
-- Recognizes and treats cardiac arrhythmias
-- Administers medications according to test policy
-- Recognizes and initiates treatment for adverse outcomes
-- Provides Cardiologist clinical information for test prognosis
-- Conducts pre- and post-test patient education

3. Assist Cardiologist Perform TEE/Cardioversion
-- Assists with TEE/Cardioversion setup
-- Assesses patient during all phases, administers
moderate sedation (TEE and Cardioversion only)
-- Performs EKGs
-- Completes documentation accurately and completely

4. Maintains following credentials:
-- Basic Life support
-- Advanced Cardiac Life support
-- Moderate Sedation

5. Assists department with patient care and testing
--Verifies orders.
-- Completes documentation accurately and completely
-- Assists department with patient care and testing

6. Maintains equipment in serviceable condition
-- Performs basic trouble-shooting of equipment
-- Contacts Bio-Medical services for inoperable equipment
-- Check crash carts/defibrillators daily

7. Uses computer systems:
-- Retrieve patient reports from computer
-- Uses MUSE to edit and retrieve EKG/stress data
-- Uses automated data system to record tests

8. Answers phones promptly and politely.

9. Assist with department functionality
-- Actively participates in Process Improvement
-- Files tests electronically and physically
-- Validates supply levels and informs when low
-- Cleans and stocks procedure rooms daily

10. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested
-- Represents Head Nurse where and when designated
-- Participate in new staff orientation, conduct staff
development training and education
-- Responds to emergencies

Required Experience:
- Previous cardiology, ICU, CCU, Cardiac Cath Lab, or stress lab experience required.
- Problem-solving skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Basic computer knowledge
- Completion of Stress Supervision program

The assessment, care and treatment provided by the Registered Nurse will be consistent with the specific age related needs of the patient. The Registered Nurse is competent to care for patient age groups including the adult and geriatric patient.

Required Education:
High School graduate, graduate of an accredited nursing program (ADN, diploma, or BSN), and licensure in the state of Missouri required.

BLS and ACLS required upon hire and renewed every 2 years.

Working Conditions:

Employee is required to walk occasionally and sit continuously. Employee must lift/carry a light (1-20 lbs.) load occasionally. Employee may be required to lift over 100 lbs with assistance. Employee is occasionally required to bend, squat, crawl, kneel, climb, lift waist to overhead. Employee is occasionally required to reach forward and reach overhead. For repetitive action, employee is required to use both hands for simple grasping and pushing/pulling. Employee is occasionally exposed to electrical hazards and CRT terminal work. Verbal and cognitive, as well as motor coordination and manual dexterity. Speech, hearing, and near-visual acuity are required. May be needed to work any shift within 0600-1700 Monday – Friday and possibly 0700-1300 on Saturdays. Employee is occasionally exposed to blood borne pathogens.

The most significant of duties are included but this does not exclude occasional work assignments not mentioned or developmental duties.

Job Relationships: Member of a comprehensive healthcare team, including other health care providers, the patient, the patient’s family, and significant others.

Takes direction from: Cardiologist, Head Nurse
Provides direction to: Patient and family, Cardiology technicians, Cardiac Sonographers
Supervised by: Head Nurse, Cardiology Services
