Under direct supervision of a Recreation Program/Special Event Supervisor, assists with the operation and safe implementation of recreational programs and/or activities. This classification is part-time, temporary and seasonal.

A first aid and CPR card is required, and proof of a tuberculosis (TB) test taken within the last 2 years are required and must be obtained by date of hire.

Representative Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assist with the planning, directing, monitoring, and supervision of recreation programs/activities for youth, teen, adult and older adult populations including: Teen services, classes, day camps, special events, sports, skate/bmx park, older adult programs and facility operations. Assist in the preparation, set-up/tear down, distribution, collection and storage of materials and equipment used in recreation programs; responsible for the organization and inventory of recreation supplies and equipment; assist on field trips and outings; assist with program budgeting and maintenance of records; solicit donations; provide information to the public about City-wide recreation programs; handle confidential information; prepare reports and other related tasks as needed; process registration for recreation programs; collect and is accountable for fees for activities; require lifting and handling of heavy equipment (limit 50 lbs); perform basic custodial duties; monitor recreation and permitted facilities and perform other duties as assigned. Incumbents in this classification may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.


Any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the required duties. Some college units in recreation or a related field is preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities & Special Requirements:

Knowledge of recreational activities, programs and special events; knowledge of group athletic games; knowledge of basic first aid methods; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to work effectively and tactfully with youth, teens, adults and other staff members; ability to encourage good sportsmanship and cooperative participation to members of the public; and the ability to instruct and lead group recreation activities. Basic computer knowledge is preferred.

Applicants must be sixteen (16) years of age or older and provide a valid work permit. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class C California driver's license is preferred. If incumbent does drive a City or personal vehicle, a safe driving record is required and must be maintained during the period of employment. The applicant selected will be subject to a criminal history investigation through the California Department of Justice (DOJ). A waiver for reference and background information must be completed.

This position may require working outside in inclement weather including extreme heat, with significant noise, fumes, odors and dust levels. There is a potential for exposure to environmental, physical and chemical hazards. The physical functions require varying periods of walking, driving, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, running, reaching and crouching. The ability to lift, push and/or pull objects which may weigh up to 50 pounds is required. A high energy level is necessary for long periods of time while leading recreational activities and conducting equipment set up/tear down; must be able to work independently. The mental functions include the ability to read, write, and compute; the ability to understand verbal instructions; the ability to retain and apply knowledge given in training; the ability to use discretion and tact in dealing with members of the public; and the ability to organize work.
