This classification has been designated as a non-classified, non-merit, at-will position.

A Recreation Aide - Seasonal & Part-Time performs a variety of tasks in support of any one of several Parks, Recreation and Commercial Facilities Department functional program areas including: setting up for program activities and serving as on-site leader, maintaining facilities and equipment, performing unskilled clerical work and other duties relating to conducting programs. Depending on assigned program or function, duties of a Recreation Aide - Seasonal & Part-Time may include: assisting staff by making needed equipment available and monitoring use, observing and/or participating in activities, assisting in maintaining order in compliance with established rules, performing cash handling procedures, such as collecting fees for programs, services or commodities and maintaining related records, taking advance registration or reservations for facility use, providing routine information on building rules and division activities to participants and the general public, and maintaining and securing facilities for programs. This class performs related duties as required.

Assignments vary based on program. Vacancies may occur in any of the following programs:

Boredom Busters - Monday through Thursday afternoon program for 1st through 6th graders. Includes P.E. skills, crafts, games, and swimming (work hours are approximately 12:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.).

Ultimate Cheer Camp - Monday through Thursday morning camp. Assist in teaching choreography, chants, jumps, and conditioning skills to campers 1st through 6th grade (work hours are approximately 12:30 p.m. - 6.00 p.m.).

Cakes, Candies, and More - Monday through Thursday camp. Teaching cooking, baking, and decorating skills to campers 1st through 6th grade (work hours are approximately 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.).

Masterminds/Masterpieces - Monday through Thursday program for children entering Kindergarten or 1st grade. Assist campers in creating objects of art with a twist of problem-solving strategies through play (work hours are approximately 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.).

Camp Fiesta - Summer recreation program for individuals with intellectual disabilities ages 6 - 21. Program features a variety of adaptive recreation and leisure activities, special events and entertainment (work hours are approximately: Session I - June 3rd - June 27th 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Session II - July 8th - July 18th 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.).

Inclusion Support - Adaptive leisure program that assists individuals with disabilities to participate in typical recreation programs.

My First Camp - Monday through Thursday program that includes a variety of pre-school games and crafts to increase social skills for 3 and 4 year olds (work hours are approximately 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.).

Recreation Centers - Monday through Friday, morning or afternoon shifts. Programming for 1st - 6th grades may include sports, science/discovery, arts & crafts, games, and swimming (work hours are approximately 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.).

Youth Adventure Program - Monday through Friday, full-day. Recreation program featuring field trips, games, crafts, and daily swimming (work hours are divided into two shifts; hours are approximately 6:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 p.m. - 6:15 p.m.).

Seasonal positions are not eligible to participate in the City of Mesa comprehensive benefit package. Scheduled hours vary from 25 - 38 hours per week. Positions are FLSA exempt-recreational establishment. Program dates will begin from May 28, 2013 through July 26, 2013. Any vacations or absences during the season may reduce your ability to be selected for some assignments. Mandatory training dates will be scheduled between the weeks of May 13, 2013 and May 31, 2013.

Additional Information:
English/Spanish bilingual skills are desirable for various assignments. Additional compensation may be provided for these skills.

In order to be considered, you MUST detail your recreation experience on your application. Seasonal employment experience will be counted by the number of months worked; be sure to include the dates. Volunteer recreation assignments should be treated as employment and may be considered as qualifying recreation experience, depending on the information provided on the application.

To be considered for work at the beginning of the summer recreation season, applications and supplements must be received on-line by midnight on Thursday, March 28, 2013, to allow time for eligibility review.

Applications and supplements received after Thursday, March 28, 2013, must be submitted on-line by midnight on the closing date (Thursday, June 13, 2013) to be considered. Please note: applications and supplements received after Friday, March 29, 2013, will have a lower rate of consideration since the majority of our openings will be filled based on the results of the first review of applications received by Thursday, March 28, 2013.

Applications and supplement responses will be reviewed and the most qualified applicants will be placed on a list. From this list, applicants may be scheduled for additional testing and/or an interview. All applicants will be notified of their status by phone, e-mail, or postcard in the mail.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Minimum Qualification(s) Required. Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to completion of the 11th grade (Junior year), and some (6 months - 1 year) experience working with children in a recreation setting that included arts, crafts, games, and activities.

Substance Abuse Testing.
Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.
Preferred/Desirable Qualification(s). Applicants with experience working with developmentally disabled individuals are encouraged to apply, especially those with adaptive recreation program and behavior management program experience. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certification is preferred.
