The City of Lynwood is seeking an individual to work in the Youth Center. This is a Temporary At-Will position and is limited to working 950 hours per fiscal year.

Under supervision, this position will plan, organize and conduct assigned recreational programs and classes that require specialized knowledge, for children ages 3-7. Recreation Specialists will work one on one with groups of children overseeing, planning and/or finalizing projects, crafts, sports, recreational activities, field trips and weekly theme events, and perform other duties as required.

Examples of Duties:

Plans, organizes and conducts programs of dance and baton techniques, skills and appreciation, tap, ballet, modern and basic tumbling and solo, group, drill teams and novelty; may direct and produce plays for Children's Theatre Program; selects script, conducts tryouts and selects cast; conducts rehearsals; is responsible for music and choreography, design and selection of materials; promotes programs through contact with youth groups, schools, and children attending other department activities; is responsible for equipment such as recording and playback machines and facilities; registers class members; collects fees; maintains discipline at activities; plans, promotes and directs participation in recitals and parades; may maintain a variety of program files and prepare required correspondence and reports; may administer basic First Aid; may supervise part-time and temporary staff.


Knowledge of principles, practices, procedures, rules, materials and equipment requirements of a specialized recreation class, program, event or activity; basic theory and philosophy of recreation and its application to individual and group behavior; policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons involved in recreation activities; basic principles and practices of First Aid; basic recordkeeping practices; and ability to plan, organize, promote, conduct and supervise a specialized recreation class, program, event or activity; stimulate interest, enthusiasm and continued participation of individuals of various age groups in a specialized recreation activity and perform related duties as required.


Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledges and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledges and abilities would be one year of training and/or experience in recreation. Possession of a CPR and First Aid Certificate. A valid California Driver's License is required. Completion of college level coursework in Recreation is desirable.
