REGIONAL DIRECTOR

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Based in Arizona, the Regional Director will be responsible for the overall planning, direction, and administration of all regional office activities, including program delivery, fundraising, leadership development, communications, government relations, fact-finding/research and office management in order to advance ADL's mission within the assigned region. Represent ADL in the community, to the media and to public officials. To manage, motivate and develop regional staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Strategize and direct the implementation of ADL programs and policies tailored to local community needs and issues. These include outreach, programs (conferences and seminars) and legislative networking. Manage education and human relations programming such as Hate Crimes Education, and Bearing Witness.
  • Oversee constituent services, ensuring complaints and incidents are received and resolved in appropriate and timely ways. Direct fact-finding activities and implement procedures for reporting results.
  • Direct planning and set strategies for meeting regional fundraising goals, including programs, methods and timetables, in collaboration with Development staff.
  • Monitor results and, if warranted, request support from national development office.
  • Cultivate donor relationships and directly solicit major donors.
  • Recruit, develop and work with lay leadership. Establish guidelines for including lay leaders in regional activities and advisory boards and create appropriate training opportunities. Identify community leaders for involvement and recruitment to ADL. Staff a variety of committees.
  • Promote visibility and leadership of ADL in the community establishing and maintaining relationships with appropriate community institutions and leaders, legislators and government officials, media representatives, law enforcement personnel, ethnic and interfaith group leaders and the Jewish community.
  • Develop and implement community outreach including initiatives and joint ventures with elected leaders and diverse interfaith and cross cultural organizations active within the region e.g. African-American, Hispanic and Latino groups / Muslim leaders, Catholic scholars and other faith leaders.
  • Oversee office management activities, including negotiations regarding space, landlord relations, office systems, equipment and supplies. Ensure office operates efficiently and effectively within budget parameters. Establish and monitor regional operating budget.
  • Oversee regional office staff. Recruit, hire and supervise staff, establishing performance standards and monitoring results. Create and maintain systems for training and development of human resources.
  • Represent ADL and give speeches in a variety of forums to promote public awareness of ADL's mission. Respond to inquiries from the press and from members of the public, demonstrating authoritative knowledge of ADL's policies and positions and relevant local, national and world events. Read, monitor and respond to media reports and opinion articles. Write press releases and opinion pieces.
  • Participate in government affairs activities, maintaining regular contact with state, local and national officials. Advocate for ADL issues in state and local legislature.
  • Monitor relevant civil rights lawsuits in the region and identify potential Amicus brief involvement. Keep the Civil Rights Area Counsel informed of developments.
  • Contribute to national responses to issues and the development of national initiatives by participating in ADL National meetings and task forces.
  • Supervise program and support staff and interns.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • A Bachelor's degree plus additional related college courses or professional training.
  • Five to seven years prior experience in a leadership role in community relations/community service organization.
  • Experience in program development, fundraising, volunteer relations and/or staff management.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong public speaking and writing skills.
  • Ability to represent complex and diverse issues in an articulate and compelling manner.
  • Facility at building personal and professional contacts and coalitions.
  • Administrative and organizational skills. Proven diplomatic and conflict resolution skills. Ability to multi-task and respond to changing priorities.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Some legal experience is helpful.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends when necessary to represent ADL and to attend community events. Travel within the region is required. Occasional overnight travel is required.
