This position is located at the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC), an international leader in energy and environmental research, conducting projects for clients throughout the United States and the world. Key ongoing efforts include leading the Plains CO2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership and broad, growing Bakken-based research. We are looking for experienced, aggressive, scientifically trained, and market-oriented individuals to contribute to the success of the organization by performing the following functions: Provide technical oversight of new and innovative technologies in the field of reservoir hydrocarbon and brine geochemistry and integrate these technologies with existing engineering and analytical services; perform numerical simulations to better understand the geochemical processes in oil and gas reservoirs and aquifers; oversee analysis and interpretation of petroleum systems and all geochemical data for client projects; deploy and test new technologies and methods within the field of geochemistry in collaboration with the clients; assist in the preparation of technical reports and research proposals; interface with a diverse team of scientists and engineers to assess project uncertainties in oil and gas development and geologic CO2 storage; maintain geochemical databases; demonstrate proficiency with industry standard geochemical software; exhibit laboratory experience with analytical instrumentation; and provide coaching and mentoring for junior staff. This is a highly visible position with significant oversight, including the establishment of standard operating procedures; definition of competency standards; development of laboratory-marketing materials; and rollout of new geochemical services. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or equivalent experience in one of the following: geochemistry, geology, geological sciences, geological engineering, petroleum engineering, or related science or engineering field
  • 5 years or more relevant experience applying geochemistry to petroleum exploration, development, and production problems
  • Strong, all-around knowledge of geochemistry, geology, mineralogy, and physcial and chemical hydrogeology
  • Proven leadership and participation in technology development projects
  • Ability to build and maintain close links with geochemistry industry experts, research organizations, and universities
  • Ability to ensure best practices implementation
  • Experience leading field and laboratory staff, sampling staff and others to asure proper sample handling, preparation of samples, and analyses as defined by competency standards and client requirements
  • Ability to plan and execute field programs with knowledge of proprer sampling techniques
  • Ability to assist with client consulting, pricing of geochemistry services, and deployment of new services into fields and laboratory operations
  • Ability to work in large, multidisciplinary teams to support large projects
  • Demonstrated ability to track budgets and schedules for large interdisciplinary projects
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information to clients, regulators, and colleagues in a readily understood format

  • Ph.D. in geochemistry, hydrogeology, geology, environmental science or related field ideally with a focus on petroleum reservoir-related activities
  • Knowledge of production and reservoir engineering and experience using geochemistry to characterize various formations
  • Experience performing petrophysical analyses for modeling subsurface geology
  • Demonstrated competency in initiating projects and designing technical programs to help solve reservoir and production-related problems
  • Author or coauthor of published, peer-reviewed journal articles or technical papers
  • Experience in reservoir geochemistry, including show detection and evaluation, hydrocarbon alteration, reservoir continuity/compartmentalization, and production monitoring
  • Experience in the interpretation of geochemical data for source rock characterization, oil-source rock correlation, oil-oil correlation, oil -gas correlation, and thermal maturity assessment of source rocks, oils, and gases
  • Familiarity with the methodologies of various isotopic systems, knowledge of trace element behavior, and a general understanding of the analytical instrumentation where samples are run on high-resolution ICP-MS, GC-MS, etc.
  • Ability to recommend analytical programs and interact with contract labs, oversee their work, and monitor their performance
  • Strong abilities with respect to data manipulations (e.g., EXCEL, ACCESS, etc.)
  • Strong experience in the interpretation of large geochemical data sets, including quality control, data interpretation, and reporting

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in one of the following: geochemistry, geology, geological sciences, geological engineering, petroleum engineering, or related science or engineering field
  • Experience performing or interpreting experiments on the geochemical interactions between sedimentary rocks and in situ fluids in hydrocarbon reservoirs or aquifers
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Criminal history background check
