The American Institutes for Research (AIR) is a leading research organization specializing in all aspects of education and other social policy issues as well as workforce research and analysis. Our programs aim to improve the quality of education and the workplace for all people by evaluating the effectiveness of education initiatives, conducting basic education and workforce research, and furnishing technical assistance and training at national, state, and local levels. We are currently seeking a Researcher-Literacy Education to join our team in Washington, D.C.


AIR is seeking a researcher with a background in literacy to support the development, operations, and reporting of reading and writing assessments and to support the evaluation of strategies, tools, and professional development. Examples of such work include the development, operations, and reporting of reading and writing assessments for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), and Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). Activities associated with this work could be leading expert panels in developing items; reviewing items for content, difficulty, and alignment with frameworks; conducting focus groups or cognitive labs for reading and literacy items; providing framework comparisons across assessments; and providing content expertise for research studies involving reading and literacy assessments. The evaluation of literacy strategies, tools, and professional development may include activities to support the implementation of reforms aimed to improve college and career readiness and educator effectiveness systems that utilize reliable measures of teacher effectiveness and student growth.
The Researcher-Literacy Education will help develop and implement research and increase AIR's visibility in literacy education and literacy teacher professional development.


Must have a PhD or be ABD in education or related social sciences field and should have either 2 years of teaching experience or 2 years of research experience in literacy education. Expertise in a domain of inquiry (quantitative methods, classroom observations, assessment methods, survey development) required. The applicant should also have knowledge of key issues and literature in literacy education and reform of teaching and learning, as well as experience as a teacher preferred, along with strong writing and oral communication skills.
