The SME Researcher’s subject matter focus will be on economic, quantitative, and policy analyses for retirement and related employee benefit topics. Key activities include enivronmental scanning, research, analysis, writing, and reporting. The ideal candidate will have a passion for doing great work, continuously learning and improving, effectively analyzing and communicating developments and insights, adding expert insights and other value, and regularly exceeding customers' expectations. To fulfill this role, the SME Researcher will:

Research and write about retirement issues relevant to employers and employees and to countries and regions and their populations, including brief abstracts, targeted summaries, in-depth reports, analytical articles, and value-added perspectives

Respond to research requests on retirement and other HR and benefit questions from senior management, consultants, and clients by drawing on up-to-date knowledge of information resources including databases, outside experts and in-house resources

Analyze complex articles and disjointed facts and pieces of information and communicate key implications and insights

Monitor and report on studies, surveys, articles, research, and policy analyses related to retirement issues, including evaluating methodologies to assess the quality of the findings and conclusions

Work with Mercer experts and other team members to draft and peer review articles/reports/summaries

Provide research support on general employee benefit and human resource policy issues

Coordinate with retirement research and policy experts in other organizations (e.g., EBRI, Urban Institute, Brookings, Boston College Center for Retirement Research, Wharton Pension Research Council and Boettner Center for Pensions and Retirement Security)

Develop and contribute to marketing, business, and communication initiatives

Expand customer/client base

Actively participate in and make significant contributions to workgroups and special projects


5+ years of corporate/business/policy research experience with a focus on applying economic, quantitative, and other policy capabilities to retirement, employee benefit, and/or human resource issues

Masters in economics, statistics, public policy or related field required. PhD preferred.

Strong writing, presentation, and verbal communication skills, including ability to synthesize and communicate complex analyses and issues to consultants and employers

Excellent research and technical skills, including familiarity with key business resources (e.g. Factiva, ProQuest)

Strong strategic thinking and analytical capabilities

Able to see the big picture from scattered pieces of information and distill key implications and insights

Able to summarize complex articles and write indepth reports, effectively communicating analysis, implications and insights

Organized, accurate and detail-oriented

Able to work both independently and in a team environment

Able to meet tight deadlines and adapt priorities to respond to new opportunities and a varied workload in a fast paced and demanding environment

Willing to learn new skills, expand knowledge of subject areas, identify new databases and resources, and adapt to technological and business changes

Able to gain credibility with retirement research and policy experts at other organizations

Honest, direct, highly ethical and able to build meaningful relationships based on trust and integrity
