Under the general supervision of the Manger Respiratory Care, renders professionals Respiratory Care in accordance with physician’s therapeutic plans, departmental guidelines, and standards of care. In doing so, assesses patient’s respiratory condition, plans for therapy, sets up and cares for appropriate respiratory equipment, administers prescribed inhalant medications, provides appropriate patient/family education, evaluates patient’s therapy, and documents patient assessments and responses to therapies. Performs arterial blood gas and ECG procedures as indicated. Problem-solves Respiratory Therapy equipment for malfunction, proactively reports equipment in need of repair as indicated and follows up on status of repair.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
1. Consistently supports and communicates the Mission , Vision and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center.
2. Follows the St. Joseph Medical Center Guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).
3. Promotes a culture of safety for patients and employees through proper identification, proper reporting, documentation and prevention of medical errors in a non-punitive environment.
4. Interprets physicians’ orders to determine treatment requirements including type and duration of
Therapy required for patient, such as checking patient charts for new orders each shift and as needed.
5. Assess patient’s condition and acts as a consultant to the physician as appropriate.
6. Operates and monitors equipment such as ultrasonic nebulizers, oxygen therapy delivery
equipment, ventilators, medication delivery systems, volume expansion, chest percussive therapy (CPT) and positive expiratory pressure (PEP) devices.
7. Administers medication according to physician orders, prescribed departmental
and hospital guidelines, such as inhalants, surfactants, etc...
8. Observes and educates patients/family in treatments. Documents treatment activities/results/
education in the patient’s record.
9. Makes regular rounds on assigned patients in accordance with hospital guidelines and to ensure that physicians’ orders are being followed, equipment is in good operational condition and assesses patient responses to therapy.
10. Communicates patient assessments to nurse and physician and documents observations/assessments
on appropriate chart.
11. Functions as a resource person sharing/providing clinical knowledge with other technicians and nursing staff on clinical hospital units.
12. Performs other duties as assigned, i.e., performing ECG’s; pulmonary function testing (PFT); CPR, education; working as Charge Therapist; and problem-solving respiratory therapy equipment for malfunction, proactively reports equipment in need of repair as indicated and follow up on status of repair.
13. Performs arterial blood gas procedures according to departmental guidelines.
14. Assists with the orientation of employees under the direction of the Manager.
15. Initiates and proactively participates in ongoing quality improvement activities.
16. Maintains knowledge of current trends and techniques in the field by reading appropriate journals, books and other literature and attending seminars, conferences and the like.
17. Supportive of the compliance program set forth by IASIS and demonstrated by:
a. Upholds the Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance.
b. Adheres to and helps to enforce all compliance policies relevant to his/her area.
c. Assures timely compliance education as requested by the Regional Compliance & Safety Officer and/or through corporate initiatives.
18. Sets an example to all staff in their daily activities.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :
- Adult/Pedi RT - One year experience as a Respiratory Therapist in Adult/Pedi & Acute care experience preferred.
- NICU RT - Respiratory Therapist with two years experience in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit preferred.
- Respiratory Care License issued by the State of Texas Department of State Health Services.
- Certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care is required, Registration is desired.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification is required for Labor & Delivery Stabilization in the NICU.
- American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers (CPR and AED) Program is required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification beneficial.
EDUCATION & TRAINING:
the completion of an accredited school of Respiratory Care .
