Birmingham Zoo, Inc. is seeking an experienced keeper candidate to work in our Pachyderm Building, with our group of white rhinos and Nile hippo. Under the direction of the Elephant/Zoological Manager, the successful candidate will provide experienced care to the animals in the collection and perform related work of maintaining buildings, grounds and interpretive. Experience working with large animals, is preferred. Must be motivated, a self starter, enthusiastic, safety conscious and team-oriented. Strong public presentation skills while working with live animals is preferred. Duties include operant conditioning, cleaning, animal observations, assisting with veterinary procedures, environmental enrichment, and record keeping. The successful candidate will also be required to assist the elephant team when needed.
The Trails of Africa pachyderm area maintains a herd of four male African elephants, a breeding group of white rhinos, and a Nile hippo. The white rhino and Nile hippo occupy the newly renovated Pachyderm Building. The area is tasked with the breeding of white rhinos, the training of white rhinos and hippo of shifting into different exhibit yards, and maintaining the visitor interactive, Rhino Encounter.
Qualifications: Understanding and implementation of BZI’s mission (available at BZI's web page). Detailed and current knowledge of natural history, animal behavior and husbandry is required. Basic knowledge of the management of captive populations, including related AZA conservation programs. Good decision making skills. Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform strenuous duties in all weather conditions. Birmingham Zoo, Inc. is an EOE and a drug-free work place.
