Position Summary

ODOT13-0417OC - Sisters

The primary purpose of this position is to function as a member of a maintenance crew and to perform any required manual labor or equipment operation necessary to maintain, repair and/or reconstruct roadway/highway, freeway, bridges and/or rest area facilities.

Working Conditions

May be exposed to blood borne pathogens, hypodermic needles, cleaning solvents, acid drain openers, etc.

Required to wear safety equipment to perform specific job tasks (i.e., fall protection, hard hats, safety vests, steel toed boots etc.).

May be exposed to hazardous materials during accident cleanup. Must be able to do heavy manual work in hazardous locations.

May be required to be available for emergency calls, 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, including holidays; or be On-Call.

Work around heavy traffic conditions including freeways. Pick up and dispose of litter and/or dead animals.

May work in wet, damp, hot and dusty conditions. May be required to walk on rough terrain or uneven slopes; stoop or bend around structures or equipment; or climb up/down ladders or equipment.

May be required to frequently lift equipment weighing up to 60 pounds and may infrequently lift in excess of 100 pounds. May be required to work at heights up to 25 feet.

May be required to work rotating or night shifts. Work long hours, sometimes without breaks.

May be required to respond to serious vehicle accidents, which may have resulted in injury or death.

May be required to administer first aid and/or CPR.

May be exposed to herbicidal chemicals while applying chemicals.

May be required to travel overnight or for extended periods of time.

Requires a maximum 30 minute response time to Sisters for emergency call-outs.

This position is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU/OPEU).

Minimum Qualifications :

Two years of maintenance and/or construction experience in roadway/highway, bridge, sign, drawbridge or landscape, AND

Experience in each of the following areas:

A) Operating heavy and/or light motorized equipment;

B) Using hand and power tools;

C) Performing minor servicing of equipment, AND

D) Applying safety procedures, AND

Employee will be required to use a vehicle to conduct business; you must possess and maintain a current, valid Commercial Driver's License (CDLA) with Tanker Endorsement, or the ability to obtain the endorsement within 3 months of hire.

Criminal Background and additional pre-employment check(s) as required for the position will be conducted on final candidates (could include Driver License, LEDS, and/or Education Verification).

Position Duties

Maintain roadside turf and arboreal areas; clean brush, mow grass, spray pesticides and herbicides, and dispose of roadside debris.

Dig and clean ditches, catch basins and drainage systems. Repair culverts, inlets and erosion.

Maintain restrooms and information centers at rest areas; perform minor building maintenance.

Perform minor surface repair including hand, pothole and concrete patching and small inlay work, build/repair roadway shoulders and bike paths, and perform minor construction.

Sweep highway facilities such as shoulders and intersections; perform clean-up of sidewalks, graffiti, paving, bridge walks, and islands.

Plow snow, sand and de-ice roadways.

Maintain, repair or replace guardrails, barriers, fences, glare screens, roadway delineators or milepost markers; apply, maintain and/or replace roadway/highway striping and/or legends.

Respond to accidents and other emergencies; secure area by providing traffic control and coordinate activities of other agencies and the public to ensure the safety of the public and crews; assist with clean up involving accidents and spills.

Perform highway maintenance duties at night during off-peak traffic times.
