This 1-3 year post-doc position advances the mission of Denver Zoo by supporting our Rocky Mountains/Great Plains (RMGP) Focal Area Program. The successful candidate will work under the Vice President for Conservation, and work closely with the rest of the Department of Conservation Biology, especially staff working within the RMGP Program.

This position is based at Denver Zoo in Denver, Colorado. We envision that the successful candidate will spend a minimum of 3 cumulative months of the year in traveling within the RMGP Focal Area and the other 9 months in Denver, CO. The exact nature of the conservation work will be determined by the candidate in consultation with the Vice President for Conservation, RMGP Program Director, other Denver Zoo staff, and collaborators, but will focus on pertinent conservation issues facing the RMGP region.

Essential Functions:
•Conduct one or more original conservation project(s) in the zoo’s RMGP Focal Area that is based in sound experimental design and will be translated into practical conservation biology and management practices. We are open to both biological and social science projects.
•Help secure funding to support our initiatives in the RMGP Focal Area through competitive grant-writing, innovative fund-raising strategies, and individual and corporate donor cultivation, working in close collaboration with the DZF’s Development Department.
•Assist in developing a landscape-level strategic plan and conservation program for the RMGP Focal Area.
•Take the lead in developing a process for rigorous, yet efficient method of evaluation that we can apply to all Denver Zoo conservation projects.
•Promote the conservation biology department and its work (especially in the RMGP Focal Area), to zoo staff, trustees and volunteers, other scientists, collaborators, stakeholders, international partners, and the general public through reports, meetings, speeches, popular articles, web pages, photography, and peer-reviewed scientific papers; working in close cooperation with DZF’s Marketing and Communications Department.
•Support programs in the RMGP Focal Area and other areas as needed.
Additional Responsibilities:
•Participate in departmental meetings, retreats, and other initiatives.
•Travel to and from field site(s), as needed.
•Administrative tasks.
•Performs various tasks as assigned.
•Ph.D. or the equivalent in Wildlife Ecology, Conservation Biology, Conservation Policy, Conservation Education, Human Dimensions of Wildlife, or similar field.
•Experience working on a wide variety of conservation projects in conservation, ecology, and the social sciences, including designing and conducting research with little direct supervision.
•Willingness and ability to effectively write and speak to scientific and lay audiences about the importance and findings of the research.
•Proven fund raising ability, or at least a willingness to learn. Innovative approaches to fund raising a plus.
•Ability to work in a wide variety of settings and represent Denver Zoo in a culturally sensitive manner
•Ability to work cooperatively with a wide and diverse range of collaborators, including other researchers, government agencies, conservation organizations, private wildlife conservancies, land trust, and private ranches.
•Willingness to travel and spend a significant portion of time traveling throughout the RMGP region.
•Experience working in the rural Rocky Mountains or Great Plains preferred.
•Spanish language skills a plus.
