Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawaii Cancer Center (UHCC) located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


DUTIES: Plans and executes organic reactions; isolates and identifies products using 1H- and 13C-NMR, mass spectrometry or other appropriate spectroscopic methods; troubleshoots organic reactions that are inefficient or that fail; searches the relevant scientific literature; and writes reports detailing the work.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Chemistry with a specialization in Organic Chemistry. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in Organic Synthesis. Experience in the interpretation of 1H- and 13C-NMR, mass spectrometric and IR data for structure determination. Experience with High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) operation and analysis. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: General knowledge of working in a biological research laboratory. General knowledge of chemical and biological waste disposal procedures. Ability to conduct chemical reactions on milligram quantities of material(s). Ability to work with air- and moisture-sensitive materials. Able to maintain an online computer database of chemicals present in the laboratories of the Cancer Center. Able to follow complex written and oral instructions, must be able to communicate effectively with peers and superiors, both orally and in writing. Must be able to use computer-generated spreadsheets to track inventory and use. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to lift waste containers weighing as much as twenty (20) pounds.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry. Experience with natural products total synthesis. Track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
