Regular, Part-Time (50% FTE), Limited-Term (Three (3) years, renewable up to four (4) years), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope Project, located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


DUTIES: Participates in astronomical research on star and planet formation under close supervision of a staff member of the Subaru Telescope.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Astronomy, Physics, or Engineering. EXPERIENCE: Two to four (2-4) years of research experience as a master course graduate student. Experience in astronomical observations and data reduction. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge in observational astronomy and physics. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to perform and complete a PhD research project under supervision. Skills to prepare practical scientific documents. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet, and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Previous involvement in astronomical research on star and planet formation. Knowledge of physical processes in formation and evolution of stars and planets. Able to plan and conduct astronomical observations.
