Primary Job Function:
Abbvie Cancer Research is seeking a highly skilled Enzymologist/Biochemist to lead a team of 3-4 scientists responsible for providing comprehensive biochemical assay support for cancer drug discovery.
Drive the development of novel assay methodologies for primary screening and selectivity profiling. Work with cross-functional teams to support early hit identification, hit-to-lead and lead optimization efforts for numerous diverse projects. Coordinate in-depth mechanistic studies as needed. Communicate regularly with multiple project teams to stay current with comprehensive project datasets and to participate actively in strategic decision making. Conceive and execute novel research in support of target identification and validation. Critically evaluate current literature and assimilate new advances to support the achievement of team goals. Foster and participate in collaborations within and outside of the company. Actively participate in the publication of primary scientific literature and patents. Manage daily work activities and support the professional development of staff.
Position Accountability and Scope:
Accountable for team performance in the timely delivery of high-quality data. Must maintain high scientific standards, actively monitor data quality and proactively identify and resolve potential issues. Participate in setting goals and defining strategies. Expected to be a thought leader and a resource for other groups throughout the therapeutic area. Responsible for maintaining a productive and safe laboratory environment, including compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements. Will be responsible for maintaining a permit for the possession of radioactive materials and ensuring the proper use and disposal of such materials by staff.
PhD or equivalent in Biochemistry, Enzymology or related discipline with 3 or more years experience. Demonstrated scientific excellence with strong publication record. Strong understanding of enzyme reaction kinetics, equilibrium binding and association/dissociation kinetics essential. Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills required.
Experience in Cancer Research and/or Drug Discovery. Expertise with fluorescence spectroscopy (FRET, polarization, etc.). Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a productive scientific staff. Experience handling radioactive materials. Experience with robotic liquid handling systems.
