Job Responsibilities

This Statement of Work covers the need for the services of a college student to provide technical and/or analytical support in the field of Marine Biology for the Black Abalone Project. The Navy needs to maintain the population that has been threatened by military operations. The purpose of this project is to help develop methods to maintain and condition black abalone for spawning activities. New maintenance methods will be developed for increasing the abundance of this dwindling species.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate Level: B.S. in Marine Biology major working on Masters or PhD Required Course Work: Marine Biology Marine Algae Chemistry I and II Biochemistry I and II Organic Chemistry Biostatistics Physics I and II

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Assist in developing new methods to condition black abalone prior to induced spawning in the laboratory. Assist in developing new methods to increase settlement of newly spawned larvae. Conduct laboratory studies to advance sensor systems to mitigate bioluminescence and address wake detection schemes as demonstrated from controlled laboratory studies on bioluminescent plankton species. Investigate and validate sensor output results from field studies with controlled laboratory experiments designed to emulate field sensor response. Report results to Primary Investigator on a continuing basis and prepare final results at the conclusion of contract period. Monthly Status Reports and Bi-Weekly Time Reports shall be in accordance with basic contract CDRL.

Preferred Education/Certifications

GPA of 3.5 or higher is desired.

Preferred Experience/Special Skills

IBM PC compatible computers Experience with Microsoft software. A good background in the culture of marine gastropods, including feeding regimes of several species of abalone with knowledge of spawning protocols is preferred. The contractor should have a good background in the culture of abalone and their maintenance. The contractor should also feel comfortable to conduct these investigations and understand the data collected. The contractor should be motivated to solve inconsistencies between field results and laboratory results and recommend potential solutions for further work.
