Job Responsibilities

This Statement of Work covers the need for the services of a college student(s) to provide technical and/or analytical support in the field of chemistry for the Capacitive Deionization {Con project. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the capacity of the CDI system for treatment of water to drinking water levels. Technical efforts shall consist on either use water from the laboratory, from DoD installations, or seawater, with sporadic spiking of the water with contaminants of concern, and to have this water treated by the CDI system. Metal contaminants shall be measured in the water before and after treatment as a measurement of the capacity ofthe CDI system to remove these contaminants. The benchmark is to have treated water at drinking levels accepted by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be currently enrolled with enough units to be considered a senior and have course work in Chemical Engineering and have experience in 100% of the task requirements described below, and be able to accomplish 90% of the work independently. Experience in sampling and analysis of environmental samples using trace metal-clean techniques. Experience working in clean room environments. Experience preparing artificial seawater, and working with seawater. Experience in sample filtration following trace metal-clean techniques. Required Course Work: Student must be enrolled or completed upper division chemistry or chemical engineering coursework. Completion of sophomore-level chemistry laboratory course.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to review, analyze and document specific operational procedures, and/or perform feasibility studies, as well as data compilation and reduction. Conduct treatment experiments and measurements, analyses, tests and evaluation (including preparation of waters for treatment by the CDI system, and sampling prior and after treatment following trace metal-clean techniques). Perform literature searches and reviews; compile and catalog background material; and/or preparing summaries and bibliographies. Complete monthly Status Reports and Bi-Weekly Time Reports in accordance with basic contract CDRL.
