PENDING FINALIZATION OF BUDGET 2013-2014

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Familiarity and ability to develop and implement instructional and behavioral management strategies for special needs students. Ability to teach several academic areas. Understanding of development and implementation of individualized education plans. Ability to administer and interpret a variety of academic and related assessment instruments pertaining to special education. Applicants for the position of special education teacher shall be considered on the basis of qualifications.

PLANNING:
The teacher is able to plan instruction to achieve selected objectives related to individual/

group needs, the academic program, social/emotional growth, and the cultural background of students.

KNOWLEDGE:
The teacher possesses:
-

ability to teach several academic areas

-

knowledge of the subject(s) to be taught

-

knowledge of human growth/development as related to the teaching-learning process

-

knowledge of the American public school system

-

knowledge of special education regulations and guidelines

MANAGEMENT OF CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT:
The teacher demonstrates evidence of being able to:
-

effectively communicate with students

-

help students develop positive self-concepts

-

effectively organize time, space, materials/equipment for instruction

-

establish a positive learning environment

INSTRUCTION:
The teacher demonstrates evidence of being able to:
-

effectively implement instructional plans

-

use appropriate instructional techniques

-

facilitate the independence of the student as learner

-

develop and implement I.E.P.s

-

co-teach with general education staff

The teacher demonstrates evidence of being able to:

effectively assess students' needs and progress

effectively meet the needs of exceptional students.

The teacher demonstrates a readiness and ability to:

-

work cooperatively with other staff members

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
CT certification in Comprehensive Special Education Pre-K - 12.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Co-Teaching experience. Experience in behavior management (development and program implementation). Demonstrated success with parents of special education students. Experience co-teaching and working as part of a team.

Fluency in Spanish is an asset.
