Qualifications Must possess at least a master’s degree (preferably in a human service related field – e.g. social work, psychology, counseling, etc.) and meet Virginia DBHDS criteria for qualified professional (developmental disabilities and/or mental health – preferably both). Understanding of the systems of care for individual with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and mental health needs is necessary. Candidates must be flexible, patient and comfortable with teamwork and diplomacy. This position carries a high degree of autonomy and will require an individual that is highly self-motivated. Candidates that have experience with experience in mobile crisis intervention services, working with individuals with challenging behaviors, positive behavior support (PBS) and/or applied behavior analysis (ABA) are encouraged to apply. Reliable transportation is required for this position.

Responsibilities The START Coordinator provides systemic crisis intervention and prevention services for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities and behavioral challenges and/or mental illness throughout Health Planning Region I covering central Virginia (CSB areas include – Region Ten, Horizons, Rappahannock, Rappahannock-Rapaidan, Harrisburg, Valley, Northwestern and Rockbridge) . Staff consult with individuals, their families and the existing system(s) of behavioral health intellectual disability, and/or developmental disability care representatives (e.g. targeted case management, outpatient therapists, PACTT, emergency services, crisis stabilization units ICF/MR, residential supports, inpatient psychiatric services, ID and/or DD Waiver services, supported employment providers, day program providers, etc.) assisting with identifying signs, symptoms, triggers, setting events, reassessing the presenting problem, completing comprehensive service evaluations, developing cross systems crisis plans, identifying and linking individuals to needed supports. Staff participate in a 24/7 “on-call” rotation to provide on-site crisis response, daily phone triage conference calls, weekly team meetings and monthly clinical team meetings. Staff identify training/education needs of paid/unpaid supports and provide/coordinate appropriate training to identified parties. Staff also assess individuals for admission to START Therapeutic Respite Services including in-home supports and facility based (for both planned and/or emergency therapeutic respite. Staff regularly document services provided and are responsible for completing the VA START referral screening, intake assessment, aberrant behavior checklist, comprehensive service evaluation, cross-systems crisis plan as well as other service-specific forms as necessary. Frequent and unplanned/crisis response travel is required to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.
