School-Based Mentoring - In the Big Brothers Big Sisters School-Based Mentoring program high school and college students serve as Bigs by spending time with an Elementary School or Middle School Little. Bigs and Littles are matched according to their various characteristics, interests and personality traits. Matches meet each week at the elementary school for about an hour, taking part in activities like sports, arts and crafts, and everything in between as they build a one-on-one relationship.

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides a setting and equipment (games, craft supplies, sports equipment, snacks) for the matches as well as on-site support. Program Coordinators help matches form trusting bonds with one another by providing support and ensuring child safety. The agency provides ongoing support to the volunteers, mentees and mentors throughout the course of each match to keep the mentoring friendship going strong.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine is looking for volunteers to serve as coordinators for our after-school mentoring programs. We have volunteer opportunities throughout Knox, Lincoln, Waldo, Penobscot, Kennebec and Sommerset counties. Contact us or visit our website to see if there is a program at a school in your area.

School-Based Coordinators - Our volunteers are screened, interviewed, and trained community members. They receive regular professional support from our Program Staff. Each school mentoring location has 1-2 coordinators that attend, oversee and supervise the weekly match meetings to ensure match quality and child safety. Coordinators arrive early each week to greet all Bigs and Littles, ensure set-up and clean-up of meeting supplies and snacks, facilitate group match activities if appropriate, and coach Bigs as they navigate their relationships with their Littles. Coordinators have regular weekly communication with BBBSMM staff to discuss match meeting and site logistics, attendance, successes, issues and concerns.
