The Sustainable Energy Technology Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking an experienced technical manager to serve as the Group Leader for the Energy Storage Group. The Group Leader is expected to provide managerial and technical leadership to the group while maintaining a vigorous research program. The group leader would be responsible for evolving and growing research in energy storage that leverage BNL facilities (National Synchrotron Light Source and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials) and partner with external collaborators including Stony Brook University. Present research efforts are focused in hydrogen and electrochemical storage and span from basic studies to applied research, including studies of the kinetics of lithiation of nanoparticles, in situ studies of electrode material synthesis, in operando studies of battery cycling to investigate chemistry and limiting factors in battery performance. Efforts in hydrogen storage focus on the use of alane and complex metal hydrides for hydrogen storage, and the use of organometallic synthesis for low-energy regeneration of alane. The research efforts will be located in a state of the art laboratory at Brookhaven, the Interdisciplinary Science Building presently under construction, and will include well-equipped facilities including a dedicated dry room.

The Group Leader serves as line management of staff and project manager for his/her own projects. The group leader will also assume technical leadership in new projects coming into the group. In addition, the Group Leader will contribute to relationship management with research sponsors. Currently, that consists of various offices within the Department of Energy and at New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology Consortium. The Group Leader is also expected to work with industrial research partners.

The successful candidate must have a minimum of 7 years research experience post-PhD, a strong research background in electrochemical energy storage. Experience with synchrotron techniques is desired. Education: Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related engineering discipline. The ability to lead technical projects as demonstrated by a sustained record of publication and funding is essential.

BNL is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer committed to the development of a diverse workforce.
