The Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking candidates for a Staff Scientist position in the Electron Microscopy (EM) group. Eligible candidates will have Ph.D. degree in materials science, physics, or chemistry; experience using transmission electron microscopy to answer important scientific questions; demonstrated ability to conduct creative, independent research and to carry out several projects simultaneously; a strong commitment to collaborative research involving external users of the Center; and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Scientific appointment level will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The CFN is a user-oriented research center whose scientific program is focused on the understanding and exploitation of energy-related materials, with Scientific Thrusts in Catalysis and Interface Science, Electronic Nanomaterials and Soft and Biological Materials. Major instrumentation in the EM group consists of an aberration-corrected, dedicated STEM (Hitachi HD2700) capable of simultaneous acquisition of atomic scale-images and energy-loss spectroscopy; an environmental TEM (JEOL 1400) for general purpose materials characterization and for soft/biological materials. The successful candidate's primary responsibility will be to conduct self-initiated and user-directed research associated with the Center's primary scientific thrusts, in comparable proportion and taking full advantage of the forefront facilities at the Center. Additional responsibilities include working with members of the CFN team to address general, high-resolution characterization needs of both BNL scientists and other users of the CFN.
