PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Conduct research and development activities to support raw material characterization, media development, manufacturing improvements, validation studies, investigations and other requests from internal and external customers. The Scientist will play a leading role in evaluation of critical raw materials for risk mitigation and improving the quality of SAFC Biosciences products. The position requires working independently and in a team environment to develop and optimize throughput of cell culture assays and transfer of new technology into Sigma.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Working with scientists and technical personnel in the Cell Sciences and Development (CSD) group, the Scientist will play a primary role in the Raw Material Characterization (RMC) initiative to support the characterization of cell culture media raw materials, media and other mammalian cell culture products. They are responsible for the laboratory work required for the development of new products or processes, maintenance of the lab and equipment and performing required assays. Detailed responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 Design and conduct cell culture assays and experiments for RMC, other projects and investigations as directed by Principal and Senior R&D Scientists.

 Support development of animal component-free production media or supplements for recombinant protein and virus production in multiple culture systems suitable for cGMP manufacturing.

 Develop expertise in cell culture techniques needed for culture of a wide variety of cell types at small and large scale, including set-up and operation of bioreactor culture systems.

 Demonstrate proficiency in developing and applying biological assays, analytical and molecular biology methods as needed to support research.

 Support development of automated processes to improve cell culture and assay throughput.

 Provide planning and organization support to ensure departmental goals are achieved.

 Analyze and interpret experimental data and draw conclusions. Report experimental results in a timely manner in routine group and departmental meetings. Modify experimental plans and conditions to meet objectives as required.

 Keep accurate and up-to-date laboratory notebooks.

 Prepare data for publication or presentation at scientific meetings and in technical literature.

 Other job related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
' Master's or Bachelor's degree in a Life Science discipline including Biochemistry, Microbiology or Cell Biology.

Experience:
Minimum 2 years experience in research, development and production of animal cell culture media,

products and related processes including:
' Knowledge of biological (cell-based), immunological and analytical assays.

' Optimization of animal component free production systems for recombinant proteins, antibodies and vaccines.

' Experience with cell culture bioreactors and processes.

' Familiarity with automated fluid handling systems.

' Knowledge of GLP, cGMP regulations and other regulatory requirements.

Skills and Knowledge:
' Excellent scientific, organizational and problem solving skills, including the ability to design complex experiments and interpret results.

' Ability to multi-task as several projects may be in progress concurrently.

' Excellent communication skills for writing reports, scientific papers, technical documents and presentations.

' Strong inter-personal and teambuilding skills for presenting and explaining data to multi-disciplinary departments within Sigma and external customers.

' Experience with project management/planning is an asset.

' Proficient in MS Office Suite.
