PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
In this role the QC Scientist will work to provide expert analytical support for the quality control (QC) process. In addition, the Scientist will lead efforts for Analytical development and work closely with the Tech Dev. group on their development projects. This support role is better characterized by the following five sub-roles: support current QC processes, provide new analytical development to improve analytical testing of oligos and peptides, provide analytical support for the Tech Dev. group, work on method development for QC testing and provide support for continuous QC instrument maintenance.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
' Manages analytical projects throughout the full project lifecycle.
' Communicates effectively with other Scientists and Managers to deliver assigned projects within agreed upon deadlines.
' Documents development plans, progress reports, and final reports clearly, timely and in accordance with company guidelines such as ISO or cGMP Standards and safety/regulatory compliance.
' Leads or participates in Process Improvement initiatives using accepted methodologies such as PDSA and tools such as the One Page Report.
' Documents all experimental results on laboratory notebooks and stores information in an organized manner within the assigned electronic folders.
' Supports sales and marketing activities by generating peer reviewed papers, white papers, technical notes, or by presenting technical content to current and/or potential customers.
' Assist in scheduling and maintaining equipment including PM and repairs.
' Be responsible for generating Certificates of Analysis (CoA) and custom data summaries
' Provide leadership in maintaining safe working environment.
' Operational of all QC equipment proficiently.
' Responsible for Pass/Fail of product per established QC specifications.
' Monitor and maintain QC product standard level. Ensure product quality objectives are achieved.
' Inform QC Supervisor or Manager and Production Management of all relevant production quality issues and failure trends that affect delivery.
' Review, follow, and update work instructions and processes as needed.
' Attend all QC meetings as scheduled.
' Track and analyze failed or problem product. Ensure conformance of QC testing.
' Assist in technical troubleshooting of production issues and problems.
' Ensure proper validation of maintenance of equipment for continuous use.
Requires PhD or M.S. in Analytical/Organic or Biological Chemistry with experience in mass spectrometry
' One to two years (Ph.D.) or four to five years (M.S.) of laboratory experience in Analytical/Organic or Biological Chemistry with experience in the field of Nucleic Acids or Peptides and/or other biological molecules.
' Two to three years of experience in mass spectrometry working with nucleic acids or peptides.
Knowledge and Skills:
' Critical: Extensive knowledge in field of expertise (examples; mass spectrometry, analytical method development, knowledge of nucleic acid or peptide chemistry).
' Critical: In-depth experience with mass spectrometers and HPLC; analysis and method development.
' Critical: Effective verbal and technical writing skills
' Critical: Working knowledge and effective use of common computer software (MS Office)
' Strong understanding of statistical treatment of analytical data and the use of this in constructing reports for internal & external consumption
' Knowledge of ISO standards
' Strong understanding of automation, synthesis and purification techniques of biomolecules such as nucleic acids and peptides
ADDITIONAL LOCAL NEEDS
' Exposure to variety of hazardous chemicals and potential pathogens.
' Cold room and freezer conditions as process requires.
' Required to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) as described by Sigma-Aldrich.
' Will be required to work with chemicals and general processing equipment, flammable solvents and corrosives.
' Require occasional lifting of no more than 35 lbs. and pushing heavy objects.
' Must be able to use standard office computer daily.
' Must be able to use a telephone for communication.
