position in the Medicinal Chemistry Department to support Pharmacyclics small molecule drug discovery programs. Primary assignments involve the design, synthesis, purification and characterization of biologically-active organic molecules as development candidate for the drug discovery programs; scale-up of key synthetic intermediates and molecules in interest; selection and development of synthetic strategy and routes for chemistry scaffolds. Other assignments include analysis of experimental data; quality check of CRO work and products; transfer of synthetic methodologies and communication to CROs; preparation of reports and presentation of data internally and externally; collaborating with the interdisciplinary teams including biology, DMPK, analytical chemistry and process chemistry; contributes to the overall R&D programs at Pharmacyclics.

Key Accountabilities/Core Job Responsibilities:
Design, synthesis, purification and characterization of biologically-active organic small molecules as development candidate for the drug discovery programs;

Design, select, execute, validate and development of suitable synthetic routes for chemistry scaffolds;

Scale up of key synthetic intermediates;

Scale up of development drug candidate for further in vitro and in vivo testing;

Support CROs research activities; prepare and transfer synthetic methodologies to CROs; troubleshoot CRO chemistry issues;

Quality check of CRO work and products; process CRO products;

Prepare reports and write up experimental to support patent filing; present data and progress internally and externally when necessary

Collaborate with the interdisciplinary teams including biology, DMPK, analytical chemistry and process chemistry;

Support process development of drug candidates when necessary;

Maintain a detailed scientific notebook, analytical data and other scientific information;

Maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment; perform routine maintenance on laboratory instruments such as HPLC and vacuum pumps;

Take personal responsibility for individual and co-worker safety and strictly adhere to all safety procedures and policies;

Maintain a high level of knowledge in synthetic organic methodology and reaction mechanisms through familiarity with scientific literature and share information with colleagues in synthetic chemistry.

Education and Training:
Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree in synthetic organic chemistry/medicinal chemistry with 2-8 years industrial experience;

Experience and qualification:
Strong track record of achievement in synthesis of small organic molecules with state of the art knowledge of modern synthetic methodologies and analytical and purification techniques;

Proven track record of creative thinking and consistent delivery as demonstrated by publication/presentation records.

Expertise in synthetic organic chemistry methodologies, transformations and mechanisms;

Excellent written and oral communication skills; enthusiasm, self-motivation, strong interpersonal skill, able to interact effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
