American Express (AXP) is launching an exciting, large-scale program based on the latest technologies and using an Agile approach. This role will lead a key project work stream within the program. The role is a hybrid Scrum Master / Tech Project Manager position.

The right candidate will have significant experience planning, leading and coordinating projects from initiation through to implementation. This person will lead cross-functional team and work with business partners to determine and interpret business needs, create a Product Backlog and User Stories and turn them into a technology solution. The successful candidate will have a strong Agile background and will also be familiar with more traditional Waterfall methodologies. The candidate will have significant experience managing project resources, managing change requests, providing status updates and tracking risks and issues to ensure maximum business benefit is achieved. This person must have Agile experience as a Scrum Master leading multiple project teams in a daily scrum of scrums.

Qualifications

  • Responsible for facilitating the delivery of complex IT implementations as part of a standing Agile team
  • Requires technical and business knowledge across multiple business functions and technical environments. Context - Accountabilities
  • Reports to Director of Technical Delivery
  • Partner with multiple IT and business stakeholders to ensure quality and timely delivery of projects
  • Works with the Director/Resource Manager to ensure appropriate/optimal engagement of resources. Context - Management Dimensions
  • Provide thoughtful leadership to individuals and team by shielding the team from impediments, breaking down barriers, providing necessary resources and reinforcing the vision
  • Coach and guide individuals, their team or the Agile community to promote Agile best-practices
  • Promote Agile practices through formal and informal networks. Functional Capability
  • Responsible for facilitating cross-functional Agile teams to complete iterative development projects: - Track and communicate team velocity through the use of burn down charts and iteration/release progress updates. - Prioritize the product backlog in partnership with Product Owners to focus team on business priorities, minimize waste and avoid continually changing requirements. - Organize and facilitate Agile Ceremonies (project planning, daily standups, show & tells, retrospectives and other related meetings) ensuring adherence to best practices
  • Drive flexible and continuous adaptive planning and build/implement just-in-time requirements based on changing priorities
  • Steer and deliver project communications at all levels within IT and the business to ensure transparency of development process and project performance, to coordinate escalation and issue resolution , to facilitate decision making, and to build trust
  • Ensure the Change Control Procedures are followed as defined by SDLC 2.0
  • Facilitate engagement and relationships between AET and vendor resources or partners
  • Guide integration, coordination, timing and consistency of processes throughout the Agile lifecycle while adapting to changing priorities
  • Create an environment of continuous improvement through reflective conversation and regular retrospectives, with the goal to surface issues/concerns and to identify clear action steps
  • Influence without authority through effective change and leadership management
  • Facilitate discussions and identify alternative or different approaches to solve problems, break down barriers and drive resolution of conflicts to ensure productivity of the team
  • Typically holds a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science, or other related field (or has equivalent work experience)
  • Typically has previous experience facilitating Agile & Waterfall projects with a team consisting of members from both IT and the business
  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge of Agile practices and tools (e.g., how to read Burn Down charts)
  • Practical experience facilitating transition of groups to high-performing, self-directed teams through proven collaboration and facilitation skills
  • Typically has previous experience managing geographically dispersed teams
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong IT and business relationships
  • 2+ year of Scrum Master experience
  • 2+ years of project management experience
  • Experience managing projects in Clarity preferred but not required.
