The Self-Pay Specialist is responsible for resolution of self pay account balances, answer incoming customer service calls with the ability to explain charges, services and insurance billing questions. Work with UMPhysicians departments and agencies to resolve billing inquires with a patient-centered approach, set up and maintain patient financial arrangements, recommend and screen accounts for assistance programs, make recommendations to departments and leadership for process improvements and comply with UMPhysicians policies.
They are also responsible for researching and auditing account balances, correct and update patient demographics, perform insurance verifications, update and register insurance information, maintain account comments, refer bad debt accounts to agencies, handle and resolve correspondence, statement edits, disputes and discrepancies. Demonstrate professional development by attending all staff meetings, education sessions, seminars or workshops. Takes initiative for self learning through web based education, training materials, etc. Maintain strong customer relationships with Patients, Guarantors, departments and key stakeholders as appropriate.

Preferred candidates will have previous experience in building positive results-oriented relationships and have a background with patient advocacy.
This position is located at our Brooklyn Center location.
To qualify for the role, you must possess:
- Previous experience in a role that predominately focused on providing excellent customer service
- Two years medical customer service
- Two years billing experience and insurance knowledge (registration, eligibility, etc.)
- Successfully drives results while balancing multiple priorities and tasks
- Ability to keyboard at 35 words per minute
- Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot problems
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations
- Health care claims processing, and follow-up background
- Previous experience and/or knowledge of insurance denials process
- Previous experience working with medical practice management billing system.
