The position supports the NEA’s strategic objective to focus the energy and resources of its 3+ million members toward the promotion of public education by assisting in the development of the Association’s communication campaigns and positioning to support the mission and business objectives of NEA and its affiliates.

Position Summary: The primary responsibilities of this position involve assisting in the development of the Association’s communication campaigns and positioning, including the design and oversight of innovative communications strategies and infrastructure to support the mission and business objectives of NEA and its affiliates. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating, leveraging, and planning comprehensive communication campaigns, including collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams on public affairs, creative design, internal and executive communications, media, publications, digital engagement, education and content for print, multi-media and Web. Advises the management team on strategic decisions, sensitive issues, and long range planning. Serves as the Associate Director’s (Integrated Campaigns) strategic liaison to internal and external constituencies and partners to leverage collaboration and build joint strategies. . Helps ensure quality and innovation for all campaign collateral, print, and electronic communication for NEA and tracks the effectiveness on an ongoing basis. Ensures that the organization's communications, including: branding, public, paid media, earned media, digital engagement, social media and external and internal communications are closely aligned with the broader strategies of NEA. Works within multi-disciplinary teams to conceives, plan and execute events, social media campaigns, digital advocacy, press conferences, teleconferences, speeches, rallies, etc. Conceives, plans paid advertising concepts and works with other staff and/or vendors to conceive of advertising creative and advertising buys on behalf of the Association, affiliates and coalitions. To carry out duties and responsibilities, the incumbent uses a personal computer and related software and travels frequently.

Required Skills

SELECTION CRITERIA: Tier 1 (Essential): Demonstrated professional experience in strategic and organizational communications, communications with government, media, or a communications/public relations agency. . Demonstrated experience in building effective communications campaigns. Effective track record in successfully managing crisis communications on a national scale. Proven ability to take complex policy data and repackage it for external users in a variety of clearly and easily understood formats. Highly effective analytical, interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated flexibility and effectiveness in handling multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions. Successful references. TIER 2 (Significant): Demonstrated understanding of how print and electronic communications can be coordinated to support media relations, marketing, advertising, development and advocacy. Demonstrated understanding and mastery of the basic fundamentals of advertising. Demonstrated understanding of how initiatives in media relations, advertising, digital engagement, government relations, marketing and development fit together in a successful communications strategy. TIER 3 (Desirable) : Proven record of ongoing communications professional development and training. Knowledge of NEA’s vision, mission, and strategic goals.

Required Experience

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or related discipline. Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Five years of in-depth professional experience in strategic and organizational communications, communications with government, media, or a communications/public relations agency. Professional knowledge of and experience with multiple facets of new media (video/YouTube/blip.tv, audio, podcast, Flash), and social media (blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Groupsite). Demonstrated experience in building effective communications campaigns. O THER REQUIREMENTS : Must be able to work extended hours on evenings and weekends. Samples of work products (i.e., writing samples, strategic plans or creative briefs) will be required at time of interview. Frequent travel required.
