PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
Responsible for overall operation of the drill crew and rig

PRINCIPAL AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY
1 Set up equipment and operate the drill rig in a safe manner for the purpose of obtaining soil and rock samples
2 Perform clearance of underground utilities/improvements
3 Team with the Drill Assistant in surveying test boring locations and elevations
4 Install monitoring wells and piezometers
5 Have knowledge of regulatory requirements for sealing of environmental boreholes and properly seal boreholes per those requirements if needed Will also properly backfill non-environmental boreholes
6 Clean/restore site to a reasonable level
7 Assist Drill Assistant in field logging as needed to increase efficiency and productivity and maintain safety
8 Identify necessary maintenance and cleaning on assigned drill rig drilling tools/equipment and auxiliary vehicle and provide necessary documentation Perform routine maintenance and cleaning as needed For other maintenance items notify Drilling Mechanic and Drilling Supervisor
9 Ensure that all personnel around the drill rig (including Drill Assistant and visitors) follow company safety procedures (including wearing of PPE)
10 Supervise duties of Drill Assistant to ensure a safe and efficient operation

1 To conduct all activities in a safe manner
2 To maintain the quality level of work needed for the project at an efficient rate but still maintaining a safe manner
3 To clearly communicate site conditions/issues with the Drilling Supervisor and/or Project Engineer as needed to allow drilling or to allow the Drilling Supervisor or Project Engineer to make the necessary adjustments

GENERAL DUTIES
1 Maintain a good professional relationship with the client/owner when they are present
2 Accurately and completely fill out timesheets and Drill Crew Daily Log on a daily basis
3 Perform other job duties as needed to meet department needs
4 Participate in education and training Review Geotechnical Field Manual and associated QA procedures and have understanding of sampling/field log preparation requirements

DECISIONS
1 Makes judgments of appropriate (efficient/productive but still maintaining the required level of accuracy and safety) drilling procedures to allow obtaining high quality samples based on soil rock and/or groundwater conditions present
2 Decides when underground utilities have been properly cleared
3 Judges access needs
4 Evaluates access conditions and utility clearance risks and decides whether office contact (Drilling Supervisor or Project Engineer) is needed
5 Reviews field log and judges whether Drill Assistant is correctly recording soil classifications geologic descriptions soil layer contacts and water levels
6 Evaluates encountered soil/groundwater conditions and decides whether office contact (Drilling Supervisor or Project Engineer) is needed to satisfy project quality and/or budget requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS
1 Duties usually outdoors and away from main office/laboratory location
2 Ability to lift up to 80 pounds and from a height of 30 regularly throughout the day (heavier items require handing with a two-person lift)
3 Ability to carry up to 80 pounds for a distance of 15-20
4 Ability to stand 80% (often and on uneven surfaces) and walk 20% of the time with frequent bending and stooping
5 A clear driving record while employed
6 Occasional travel and out-of-town projects possible

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1 Required
A Physically capable of and approved for the physical labor required work at hazardous waste sites and with personal protective equipment
B A minimum of 3 years of prior experience as a Drill Crew Chief II
C Demonstrated satisfactory drilling proficiency in following areas hollow stem auger drilling mud rotary drilling thin wall tube sampling monitoring well installation soil classification/logging and rock coring
2 Preferred
A Mechanical ability (operator repair maintenance welding etc)
B Working knowledge of well codes
C Class A drivers license
